Ordering 245/40/17 x 7
I have decided on the Michelin Pilot Super Sports 245/40/17 x 7. I drive the BRZ a few times a week as it is a second car. My teenage boys will drive it now and again as well.
I will be using stock wheels. Tires and wheels give me a headache. I have gotten several opinions but want to hand it over this board for any final critiques and thoughts. Thanks in advance. And yes, I know there are threads with the tire and wheel conversations and I have read thru them. Just looking for a final opinion here. Thanks! |
Why do you want such a wide tire? A 245 is really too wide a tire for a 7" wide rim. Why not just go with a MPSS in the stock 215 size.

The 17x7 refers to the size of the stock wheel.
The tires you need are 215/45/17. Nothing is going to be better than that for you. |

But yeah, 245 is way too wide for stock wheel. |
Yeah, the tread width on those 245/40/17s is 8.5 inches. Michelin recommends between 8 and 9.5" wide wheels for those tires.

If you take a look at the specs on the 215/45 Mich PSS. The tread width is 7.7" which is more than enough for a stock 86.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....SSXL&tab=Specs I'd say the stock 215/45 size would be your best option for the stock wheels. |
Listen to these guys jonnyfrank... You definitely won't be safely fitting 245s on a 7" wheel. I've got 225s on my 8" wheel and although I could definitely go wider, I probably wouldn't unless I added more power. 245's honestly don't even make that much sense to run on a car this light and with such low power.
I'd say, 225's max on the stockers. |
Some of fastest guys are running 225/45 at the track. 225 makes more sense on a 7" wide wheel, even from a performance standpoint.
|
Actually 225 fits best on a 7.5" wide rim.
Stock rim I would run 215 as that's the best fit. I'm running 215/45/17 on my 7.5" wide rim and I can corner plenty fast with good handling. |
Each tire brand have different width of tires. 215 doesn't mean all 215 are same.
Anyways, 245/40-17 is a bit for 17x7 Check this article. It's a good read http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticl...RFORMANCE.aspx |
For BRZ stock rims: PSS 225/45ZR17 or PSS 215/45ZR17?
Also, where can I find best prices on average: TireRack? |
I don't even think a 245 will seat onto a 7" wide wheel, stick with 215-225 wide. 245/40/17 should have a minimum 8" wide wheel.

215/45 or 225/45 on the stock 17x7 size is perfectly fine. 245/40 is a no go... it's like opposite of super stretched tires on those stanced out cars lol.
215/45 is stock size like people have mentioned, but 225/45 also works just fine (or even "better" subjectively) as a lot of people have also mentioned. i'd just stick with 215/45 size with decent sticky tires. compound > width |
