Wheels that won't ruin the ride

Hi guys, I'm about to put a deposit on a white 86 and just had a few questions about wheel fitment. Basically I would like to change the wheels asap, however I want to make sure the wheels I buy aren't going to ruin the handling or ride. I learnt this lesson from a friend when he replaced his MX5 OEM wheels with 17inch rims, which completely ruined the handling of the car.
I actually have a set of CR Kai's in my garage, however I think they are probably too big (255/40/17). I pretty much don't want to change the feeling or handling of the car at all, so what wheel size would be best to go for?

Cheers :happy0180:

Do you mean tires? You can put different width and profile tires on a rim. The rim height and width play a factor as well. Can you clarify what you have exactly?

Sorry if I wasn't clear, the tyres on the Works are 255/40/17 on all four wheels. I can't remember the size of the rim though, I think they are 17 x 9 (or 10?) I will have to double check, but I would've thought they would be too big regardless. They are also off my GTR, so fitment might be an issue too.

And to your answer your question I guess I'm asking what is the best wheel & tyre size combo to ensure the ride isn't affected. Thanks!

I'm thinking a 17x9 with 225/40/17 all the way around would be about perfect. I don't know anything about offset though.

If you wanted to go with 225 tyres wouldn't a 7.5" or 8" rim be better?

if it's for a GTR, u can't use it on BRZ. 5x100 bolt pattern !

For non-drop, OEM fits , I say go with 17x8 all around with 235/40 tires.

Yeah I wasn't sure about the stud pattern :( What do you mean by non-drop?

Standard ride height

17s or even 16s are the best size if you are concerned with ride but I think 18s are a nice compromise, and won't ruin ride.

Id suggest something like 18x8+40 with a 5-8mm rear spacer and 235/40/18

For a spacer free perfect fit you really need staggered wheel sizes front and back because there is extra space to fill at the back. Something like 18x8+38 and 18x9+38 or if you wanted the same rim/tyre size, 18x8+38 and 18x8+30.

For a stock replacement without lowering and not staggering wheel sizes:

17x8 (+36 to +42 offset) with either 225 or 235 tyres depending on your brand choice and available stock.
