Possible to extend steering wheel closer to the driver?
I am trying to get the steering wheel closer to the driver as I have short arms.
I don't want an after market wheel with no airbag. If I move the seat closer, my legs get cramped. I am already wearing thin soled shoes. Is it possible to extend the steering wheel closer to the driver? Does something like a spline spacer with female/male ends to extend the wheel exist? I could use it and push the steering column all the way forward and it would be at the perfect spot. Any ideas? |
I have thought about moving it, but because I have long legs not short arms ;)
As it's an electric pump it shouldn't be too hard but above my pay scale |
I know that this is the most basic question, but is your wheel fully telescoped out?

the wheel is adjustable, have you done that?

This is gonna be good

Been wondering this myself...
As it is, if I move the seat closer, my legs will cramp because they're not supported by the seat bottom at all. If I sit up more, the back of the seat doesn't fit me properly (shoulders in wrong spot, etc). My arm can't rest on the arm rests and hold the steering wheel unless I lower it all the way down, but then I can't see the dash. Wish the steering wheel came out just a bit more as it would help a bit. A bit larger steering wheel would help as well (yes yes, I know small steering wheels are sportier) |

I hope to find a solution and it would be better than good. I don't want to sit at a 85/90 degree angle so my arms are comfortable, but my back/neck is not. I am no where near from sitting laid back stunna' style. The Steering wheel is slightly higher than center so my shoulders are inline with 9/3 o'clock positions as this is the closest distance to the position my arms are at most of the time. I already wear thin soled shoes that does partially help this problem. Other alternatives which I want to avoid for safety reasons is replacing the steering wheel or replacing the seat. I could probably find some Evo X seats (do they sit lower than stock?) or others, but I would like to keep what I have and not drop a grand. |
I am with you and I think there were a similar threads like this before. I need 1 inch or so closer. I also remember Chris Harris complaining about it too...
I have no idea why they cannot do the telescopic thing a bit longer. Must cost nothing. BTW I don't know how the airbag wiring looks like, but with an extender I would consider this as a issue, maybe some airbag extension will be needed too. |
I know they make spacers for aftermarket hubs, but I don't think those spacers would work with the stock wheel. I wouldn't ghetto rig anything just to get a little extra length though since it might compromise the safety.

Try drinking more milk!?

is there a way to adjust the pedals to move back a tiny little bit? maybe that'll help (if possible) since the wheel aint getting any closer.
|
I swear car companies do this because of fat people. Only way I could resolve this issue in my NA Miata was a steering wheel spacer.
Interested to see where this goes. A spacer that plays well with the stock wheel would be a godsend. Maybe Raceseng can fab something up? |

I feel you OP. I think the same thing all the time. I'm 6'3" and I constantly feel like the steering wheel should be closer. Sometimes when I'm serious about driving, I move the seat forward a click or two so I can have my arms more collapsed to be able to get more rotation out of the steering wheel.
