I know the boxer is a noisy motor but this is really distintive and none if my fellow frs friend have this. Any thoughts on what a slight leak would sound like?

You're missing a flange or a gasket? If you're missing a flange, that's the entire end of the pipe where the bolts/nuts and the pipe pieces come together sandwiched with a gasket.
Catbacks are the back of the exhaust which is an axleback section combined with a midpipe. The overpipe connects to the header and front pipe.
Header -> Overpipe -> Front Pipe -> Midpipe -> Axleback(muffler)
Front to back of the car.
Slight leaks sound like a ticking noise. If you put a blank sheet of paper up to the flange, it would blow and move. Then you know you have an exhaust leak.
