Whoops Wrong Oil

Well I just read that the FR-S uses 0w-20 full synthetic but I've been putting 0w-30 (Mobil 1) in it :bonk: . I put about 2-3 miles on the car a day but every month or so I drive a couple hundred Highway miles.
So... should I change it?? (only been 500 miles or about 3 months)

I'm going to be going to college in eastern KY so expecting mild summer/winter

BTW I seem to be getting 40mpg Hwy, or at least that's what the car tells me

As long as it's a synthetic, 0w30 is fine. The manual recommends 0w20, but states you can use a heavier weight oil in severe conditions.

^^this^^ No sweat.

Now, your 2-3 miles/day? No no no... You are killing your engine by never getting it up to operating temp. Most of the wear occurs when it's cold because the parts don't quite fit. Also water, it accumulates in the oil and never has a chance to evaporate.

If you're regularly driving such short distances, IMHO, break out the bicycle. It better for both you and the car.

Op. Nice pc12;)

Don't worry about it ...... it will be OK. However, I would suggest you switch to 0w20 at your next oil change.

Yep, as mentioned above, the short trips are hard on an engine ..... but, it won't kill it!

I would suggest that you NOT change your life style to fit the engine of a car ..... the damn thing exists to serve YOU .....

Oh, ok. Admittedly a bit hyperbolic.

2-3 miles? Make sure to warm it up.

I have 0W40 in mine. If it gets at or close to freezing in winter, go back to 20 weight. It's fine. In warmer countries the OEM oil is 5W30 BTW.

The Subaru mech I spoke to said they recommend 5w30 for all their cars including the BRZ because the climate is just too damn hot for 0w20. The Toyota mech said that they recommend 0w20... So at the end of the day, I bought the Toyota oil.. because they are the ones who will be servicing my car *shrug*

Subaru: several models w/ turbo engines, harsher on oil
Toyota: not so much

The recommendation is valid, depending on the experience of the mechanic.

At the end of the day, as long as you are within the oil guidelines and ambient temp range(s), you can run whatever weight you want and it will be fine. The only thing suffering is your gas mileage.

I've already stopped using 0w-20 entirely and have switched to 0w-30 exclusively for the FRS. Winter/Summer don't care.

YMMV (literally)

I have 90,000 miles on my car; boosted and I beat on it everyday. I use only Mobile1 0W-30. It has treated me well. OP, you are fine.
