What the hell came out of my trans/diff?

Changed out my trans and diff fluids this past weekend. Used the same pan straight from one to the other so I'm not sure if these little buggers came from the trans or diff. I should have known to drain and inspect each fluid separately.

What the hell are these?

Is my trans or diff going to explode in a fiery inferno from hell at the track next weekend?

Oh, and to clarify, the penny did not come out of the trans or diff. It's just there to reference size. Although, it would be nice if this car started giving me some money for a change.

Thats a horseshoe clip. It's for something that rotates on a pin under tension, the washer is to keep it tight. I'd look at the trans linkage or clutch linkage.

It's not from the diff, nothing that small in there.

What he said. Not something normally used internally, and not something normally used for parts that aren't supposed to come apart at a later date.

The last time I used a clip like that was for brake shoes- on a car built in 1978. As noted, shift linkage is a good place to look.

None of the snap rings or washers look like that inside of the transmission. I think you just had something in your pan prior to the drain. It's possible they were in there but they aren't supposed to be.

Thanks,
Phil

For a minute there I actually thought that penny came out as well hahaha !

Thanks for the quick response! The pan was borrowed from a friend. I guess it's time to send the pic to him and give him shit for giving me a heart attack.

I'm sure you're not the only one. That's why I put the "clarification" in the OP. Good on you for admitting it! :respekt:

looks like a common parking brake lever attachment clip on rear brake shoes (drum). Bet he was doing rear shoes on something.

I almost thought the penny came out. Then i kept reading.

This is why a banana should be used for scale.

Packofcrows 04-06-2015 03:16 PM

hahah I thought penny came out of it too!

Which reminds me. Back in 2009

Found a cat under my hood.... on my Celica.... poor cat somehow died in there and got mauled by the fan(s).

Didn't drive car for like a month, then had friend pressure wash engine and everything in there.

BatStig 04-06-2015 03:28 PM

Thanks everyone!

And sorry for the penny. I will definitely use a banana next time. Although, $5 says someone would have thought the banana was in there.....
