High RPM for current speed

First, I'm not sure where to post this, but it's sortve related to the engine so yeah..

This is my first 4 cylinder car and also my first ManTran, so I'm not sure if it's normal or something's up with my car. Is it normal for the car to be around 3k RPM when driving 70mph?
On my older Accord and 5-series (98 and 97), 70mph was closer to 2.5k RPM.

Yeah, that sounds correct. My auto reads 2k at 60mph and the manual is geared a bit more aggressively.

Thorpedo 04-02-2015 12:28 AM

Yes, its normal.

Yes, that's normal.

Yup, 70mph at 3000 rpm in 6th gear

HachiRo 04-02-2015 05:49 AM

Awesome! Thank you everyone :P Definitely some stress off my mind.

its not normal ... its just the way our car is set up though .. normally most cars are not that high RPM when on the highway
for the twins it is normal for the manual transmissions, auto is a bit lower (i haven't actually checked but from the gear ratio im guessing it is)

ajc209 04-02-2015 08:06 AM

formula one cars idle at 6k rpms....

This is a high revving engine (compared to most road cars with ~6k rpm red line) so gear ratios are ajdusted accordingly to take advange of those rev's and put down a bit more torque....

3Krpm is only 40% of total revs. 2400rpm is 40% of 6K.....

4:10 gear ratios on the manual is the reason your RPM is higher.

Auto is a 3:83 I think??? Reason why it gets a little better highway gas mileage, but the manual is faster. :)

Perfectly normal. Try my S2k with 4.77 gears. 5k at 70mph:D

continuecrushing 04-02-2015 02:46 PM

I sit at around 800rpms at 70mph

When coasting

The rear diff ratio is the same for auto and manual.... 4:10. The 6th gear ratio in the transmission is lower with the autos than manuals.
