New to rim fitment; someone please advise
Firstly, thanks for all the great stuff in this subforum! Lots of good information... However, numbers make my head hurt. So, if one of you wheel/rim fitment gurus could lend me a few moments of your time to answer a few questions:
Info on the rims I have that I want to mount: 17x6; +45 offset; 57.1 hub. Intend to mount 225/45R17 OR 215/45R17. I have rims with a 57.1 hub bore and ours is 56.1... ...would I need hubcentric rings or not? If so, what size? My guess is yes, but I'm not confident in that assumption (or the math). Also, the rims will be almost 10mm MORE tucked into the wheel well. What are your recommendations for spacers to get "flush"? The general consensus to get the stockers flush is 15 in the front, 20 in the rear, yes? So with the extra 10mm; 20 front and 30 rear? Any safety concerns with a 30mm spacer? Are there any manufacturers that produce that size? And lastly, thanks! |
first, why are you putting 17x6 wheels on the car? And I wouldn't put a 225 on a 6", stay with 215, if you HAVE to have these wheels on
hub bore-difference of .5mm...they don't have hubcentric spacers that small lastly...it sounds like you're jumping through a lot of hoops to put wheels on this car that are not really the right size/offset. Money will be better spent on wheels that fit properly. |
Meh... You might be right about the hoops bit! The rims are left over from a previous car so there's no cost involved expect to get them to fit right. I figure I'm not out much if I mount them.

I would try selling them, and use that cash toward new wheels. Just cause its a lot of work to swap out lugs/spacers/bolt on spacers to end up with a "compromised" setup. But, if you love the wheels, we can figure out how to make them work of course. But at a minimum, you're adding some pretty big spacers(20mm or more) and buying new tires. Not horrible of course, when it comes to fitting wheels, if I have to run 10mm or larger spacers/bolt on spacers I'd rather just buy wheels that fit right from the go! |
I've seen some guys around here use 20mm front and up to 30mm rear spacers for a flush look with oem wheels so that should give you an idea I wouldn't feel right using spacers bigger than that . The hub centric ring, you don't need for that 1mm difference and I think they don't make it anyways.

I can imagine they would bend really easy too. |

:confused0068: lol I stand corrected but yeah I think they would be very prone to breaking or bending. Amazon has everything lol, its like good for searching. |
please dont put 17x6 wheels on. the stock wheels are tiny enough. prius wheels are probably bigger than that
|
Agree, I know they're free and all but unless you just want to put them on a snap a pic then remove.. it'll affect negatively the handling characteristics of the car. I think a 225 is the biggest you should consider using and that'll probably pull the sidewall in.
|
I'm not sure how those narrower rims would negatively affect handing; can you elaborate, please? It's understandable if the tire were more narrow, but if the tire retains its 215 width I would think there would be nominal differences. Granted, a 225 would have all kinds of sidewall flex going on, but I'm not sure about the 215. I'm not trying to be argumentative, I genuinely don't know. For what it's worth, I don't autocross or drift (well... Drift MUCH...).

225 on 6" works, but is usually not recommended. I came from srt-4's(turbo'd neons haha) and there was a LOT of debate about 225 on the stock 17x6 wheel...a lot of people did it, but it was generally not recommended. Arguably, if you had a lighter weight wheel, you could be faster than a wider, but heavier wheel(say, same stock tires 215/45/17, but a 14lb 17x6 vs stock 20lbs 17x7). Or maybe the stiffer sidewall of the wider wheel would prevail? Don't know. This thread will probably get derailed by idiots coming in here with complex math to prove me wrong, but just throwing out hypotheticals haha... |
Perhaps I should clarify my previous statement: Other than the obvious wider-is-better for grip, please keep in mind I'm not looking to set records at the track. Optimally, I would run an 17x8 or 9. These are free, they're 5x100, and they don't look bad ('cept skinny)... I'm just curious as to what you all thought. If I said I was planning to ONLY use them for winter, would that make it better? (Ignore the fact that I'm in Hawaii... LOL)
