Do it yourself oil change

hey guys/ gals/ things!
I was wondering if there's any real bad thing about doing
An oil change myself as opposed to going to the dealer?
Last time I went to the dealer they overfilled my oil... So I'd rather
Do it myself because I know I would do it right
Thanks in advance

I suppose the only real bad thing is that you get a little dirt/oil on your hands.

My suggestion:

Buy the fumoto drain valve before doing the oil change and install it when you're changing the oil. It will make every future oil change that much easier.

also, the dealer will typically provide free scratches on your car via car wash

So you're missing out on that.

They're wonderful. I just flip the valve and go watch TV for 5 or 10 minutes and don't even need so much as a paper towel.

I feel like that's a major risk

how so? the nub doesn't extend past the skid plate even though it does appear that way in the picture. its been on my car for 8000 miles, 0 leaks, easiest oil change i've ever had.

you can also get one without the extra nub.

I have one of the short ones. It works just as good as the one with the nub and is barely bigger than the stock drain plug. ALSO, you can order some locking rings from the website if you are worried, but it's actually a little difficult to open and close. So no worries about it "popping" open or getting bumped. They are awesome.

yeah i tested the valve out manually before installing to see how likely it could come undone while driving. and i just don't see how it could be done without someone going down there and doing it.

Anyone knows if the long nozzle one sticks out at the bottom for the 86?

It's not as simple as a magnetic drain bolt is essentially what I'm saying. What if a seal fails in the drain valve? Is the valve level locked into place as well? What about possible clogging issues?

Have a read here

The valve is locked in place. You have to move it against the spring, then turn it before it opens. If you felt this, you would likely not question the seal. It's a spherical thing that turns in there. The seal is probably 3/4" thick. any failure would probably include your drain bung being ripped out too.

I do agree that a magnetic drain bolt is more simple. I suppose that the Fumoto valve does add another point of failure to the oil draining system.

On the bright side, once it's threaded in, you don't have to remove it again, and you never have to worry if the drain plug is on tightly enough again, which is nice.
