When 5.8 really equals 6.25
Did my first oil change on the BRZ today at 5,909 miles. Will probably change again at 10,000 miles, and settle into 5000 mile intervals afterwards. By the time I checked my oil level for the first time on the car, it was just slightly below the second hole (full mark) on the dipstick. I figured it might be burning a little, since it's new, but it never changed after that. So I put in about 5.8 quarts today, and what do you know, it's right below the second hole again. I added what was necessary to get it right to the full mark and it turned out to be about 6.25 quarts. I assume they probably measure out 5.8 quarts at the factory during initial fill. So I wonder if it really needs 6.25, or if I just got a short dipstick (setting myself up with that one). My garage is level, and the dipstick was all the way pushed in. What have others found?

What is your procedure for filling and checking? I've found it takes a good heating up and 30+ minute wait period before all my oil is back down in the pan.

I've checked it cold in the morning, and warm after a drive. The oil expands a little when hot, but not much in this car. My previous 2.5 boxer was worse, or maybe the oil was more susceptible to expansion. FWIW, I had two BMW 3 series cars simoutaniously at one point, both with the 2.5 six, both calling for the same amount of oil, and one consistently took almost a full quart more to get to the full mark on the dipstick. Maybe my local Walmart siphons oil out of some of the 5 gallon jugs before I buy it.

Mine seems to use about 5.3 quarts at oil change time. See this thread that I started:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11734 A gallon is 4 quarts, are you sure you didn't put in a gallon + 1.25 quarts = 5.25 quarts? |
Nope, five quart jug, then a little more than another quart.
