Best name in backup cameras?

My wife tried to get a backup camera for me for Christmas. The problem is that after spending a lot of time on the phone with a rep from CarID, she got sold a rear view mirror monitor that didn't even include a camera.
Suffice to say that it is going back because the car came with a perfectly good monitor.
The problem is that reviews on cameras by themselves seem to be hard to come by so I'm at a loss as to what cameras to focus on. What brands have been providing consistently good results?

The popular option on this forum is the BeatSonic license plate camera. It installs/replaces one of the license plate bolts. I chose this option http://m.ebay.com/itm/261641630006 because I was looking for the OEM look. I am very happy with my choice...the kit was complete and the quality of the camera is solid.

At the size and resolution of the OEM monitor, the quality of most cameras on the market would be difficult to discern. Also, when it comes down to it, when used solely when backing up, the camera will only be viewed briefly.

Some people have setups (multi-cam) where they can view the screen continuously while driving...in such cases perhaps one considers a better camera... personally I would be happy with the quality I am already getting.

Hope this helps.

Do you by any chance know if the roadshow backup camera is also compatible with the BRZ by any chance?

The Roadshop harness is basically the same as the BeatSonic. However, the BRZ HU camera output is 6v (I believe) so it would have to be wired with a 6v (6+6) relay to initiate a 12v camera. That is the only difference I can think of. There is also this option http://www.autoharnesshouse.com/19867.html it includes the 12v relay.

From the autoharness website :

Quote:

The stock head unit is wired with a 6-volt output. This harness uses a 6-volt relay and the 12-volt accessory power provided to the stock head unit to provide a 12-volt output and composite video input for any standard automobile backup camera.

I have recently helped a friend who bought a Roadshop Camera kit off Amazon/Ebay ( forgot where) and they have updated version of camera which works on 6v and can use the power wire straight from the harness. Makes install that much easier!
