My money is on throwout bearing, there have already been a handful of failures and it's easily exacerbated by aggressive driving.

Toss up on whether the dealership admits it's a failed part and replaces it or instantly says you've been abusing your car and this is what you get and it's a $1k job. The SoCal suboforum should be able to point you to a good dealership.

$1K to replace a throwout bearing? I just crapped myself......... How much different can this car be from a Camaro or Firebird manual transmission job? Am I missing something? How many hours are they charging for labor?

Would I correct to assume that the exhaust has to be removed too?

Exaggeration, guess the ridiculous 'you abused it!' wasn't extreme enough to tip people off.

And you're right, it's bog standard RWD stuff, pull driveshaft, pull tranny, swap clutches, bolt tranny back up, install driveshaft, hardest part is dealing with the gear lever (like most cars).

BUUUUT, most people don't have the facilities or confidence to do this on their own, after all the throwout bearing is relatively cheap and you risk future hassles on warranty work. ((Of course your DI seals melted, you didn't allow a trusted certified UTI dropout replace your throwout bearing for $100/hour!)/exaggeration)

Well, first of all, I read somewhere a while back that the national average for labor at import dealerships is around $120 per hour. They're probably going to charge you at least six hours of labor to remove and reinstall the transmission (even if they only actually put three hours into the job). So there's $720 right there. Then you'd be kind of stupid to have the transmission out and not go ahead and replace the clutch while you're at it, so parts at dealership retail prices along with "shop materials" and such are easily going to put you up over $1000.

Or you can find a local mechanic you trust, order the parts yourself at wholesale and let him charge you a few hundred bucks to install them. I needed work on my Jeep that I couldn't do out in the street in front of my apartment, so I found a small local shop on line that had great customer reviews and reasonable rates.

Or you can take the $1000 you would have spent at the dealership and invest it instead in the tools you would need to do it yourself. You might fuck it up, but you'd learn something in the process. Of course that's not always practical for us apartment dwellers.

And I used to do brake jobs for a case of beer...............back in the day.

And, replace the fuel pump on my 70 Coronet R/T on the side of the highway. It would rip one up every 1000 miles or so, so I just kept a couple in the trunk.
Changed the clutch in my 58 Ford in a field beside the highway once as well.
Those days are long gone!

I wholeheartedly trust Alex at fuzion teknique in Gardena. Check him out if you haven't. He's done all my work. So if the dealer says that's the problem and it's not covered he will handle it. But they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Isn't this the second blown fuel pump in the last few weeks? Are we moving now from crickets to pump failure? Didn't they test these cars before the release?
