anyone have any good tips installing this seal?

its also known as the rear main seal. the one between gearbox and motor around the crank.

Drain oil from the gearbox before you pull the drive shaft.

Remove the top bolts from the bell housing last. Support the transmission on its way out so you don't break shit.

Mark the position of the pressure plate before you remove it.

Make sure you have a clutch alignment tool for the reassembly.

Are the flywheel bolts torque-to-yield? Better check on that. In any case, use a torque wrench for everything.

pre-lube the seal before installing it and be careful not to nick it.

How many miles? What happened?

picked up a used motor, figured it would be a good idea to change the seal out since there was some signs of seepage.


more pertaining to installing the new seal would be good tapping it in with a PVC pipe and still popping out on the opposite side.

I haven't seen what our rear main looks like but you have to be very careful with all lip seals not to get the sealing lip caught on the shaft as it can roll over and not only will it not seal but the spring can wear a grove in the crank.

no spring in the seal. it sure is difficult trying to get it to go in evenly .. any other suggestions? I'm glad I picked up an extra seal.

did it using the pvc cap. the trick I learned was to push it in by hand as much as you can evenly, use the cap to lightly tap the raised edges. it helped having an extra set of hands holding the cap.

Oh, a cap! That makes perfect sense. I'm going to remember that. :)
