Question about engine knock?

Sorry, i'm a total noob on this.

Lately I notice my engine does this tiny knock? It feels like a small thump from time to time when it's idling. (and only when idling) .... Is this normal?

Being skeptical and connecting dots in my head ever since my car made a terrifying screeching sound trying to start back on Monday after an hour of highway driving. I release the clutch after I heard that (like 3sec ish) and restart again fine thou.

Is there any chance you could post a video? Does the tach move oddly when this happens?

chaoskaze 10-23-2014 01:14 AM

I dont think a video will show thou, I guess I need to find a fellow 86er in my area to sit in my car. The small thump is evidently there when it happens thou.... or maybe I need to stop using von's (safeway) 91 lol..... cuz its the only cricket free gas in town that I know of. My friend tells me I'm just playing with my head since no CEL.

Mods?

Are you sure you are not feeling a misfire maybe? Does it get louder as you rev it?

Doubtful if it is a small intermittent thump at idle that it is rod knock or detonation.

AC compressor clutch at idle would be my guess.

Im going with @woode on this; it would be louder across the entire rev range directly preportional to rpms.

But we can help about as much as a blind man in a dark room.

We need some logs, from either you or the tuner.

My guess is its just the sound a boxer engine makes. They are not the best sounding. Plus the tensioner pulley makes a little noise because it bounces some.

I always think my car is making weird noises, and it just came back from the dealer so I know it is good.

Edit: its a knock sounds and not a tick sound. My crickets only happened at idle

Ain't this the truth.

I quit trying to keep track of all the different noises my engine makes. I used to stress over every chirp, squeak, clunk, tick, etc. until I just accepted that it's normal. ..or maybe it's not and my engine is going to explode into a million pieces one of these days.

just stuff in the engine.

You wont have knock at idle unless something is REALLY wrong. And it would be really obvious because your car would run horribly

Ive got what i think might be a similar issue.

I've got about 1800Km's on my car (1100 miles roughly) had my check over at 1300, i now have a slight well i don't know what you would call it, when you turn the car on cold it stays at high revs then drops, mine sits just on 600revs at idle and the needle moves a tiny bit up and down every now and then, the car also occasionally gives the tineyst little shake, like what happens if you dont give it enough revs and its going to stall but only the tiniest bit and not all the time. Bit weird but only happens at idle, no issues with reving or when moving.

I had the same issue, OFT changed the RPM idle and now sits perfectly at around 700-750ish with absolute no rough idling or "dip". I Highly recommend this
