Music from External Drive

I was curious, is it possible to use an external hard drive to play music through the car?

I imagine it'd be easy. You might just have to power it separately. I'm not sure the USB port could power and play the music from it--but I'm certain it will pull the music files from it.

There is a 8GB limit according to the manual, so I am not sure how that would work with a hard drive...but I plan on finding out, as I want to try the same thing.

I have a 2014 Limited with a 32gb sandisk USB without any issues. Can show album art and all that. Don't know if the 8gb limit is really accurate? Not sure if it applies to the SD card maybe

^^ I use a 16GB usb stick as well. No issues.

Thanks...I have some experimenting to do, I think!

What's the largest size drive anyone has used?

I've been using this [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002HGFKR8?pc_redir=1413857460&robot_redir=1"]elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader -Works up to 32GB- (Black):Amazon:Electronics[/ame] with a 64GB Micro USB card, it works but there is a trick to it. You have to change the source to USB from another source prior to turning off the 86... meaning, If I were to turn off the 86 with the source mode in USB, the next time I start my car it just keeps showing the loading animation without ever actually loading. Even if I switch back to another source and then back to USB it will not load. Now, if I change the source from USB to for example the FM radio prior to shutting off the 86...the next time I turn it on I can switch it from FM to USB without hardly any delay. Weird but it works.

Thanks...sounds like a possible solution...I need 32GB or larger for my music. I have a Microsoft Zune, but cannot get it to work through USB...not surprised really.

The good thing about the Elago Nano reader is how low profile it is... almost like it's not even there.

It's not a size limit, its a number of files per folder limit. I think 255?

Maybe that's why the manual limit of 8gb is being exceeded...:iono:

I have a 250GB USB powered seagate harddrive in my car and it works great. It needs to be reformatted to FAT32. I have several hundred albums on it.

BRZ'n 10-31-2014 12:10 PM

it also fits perfectly in the slot directly below the stereo.
