Fire extinguisher size and location
 

I want to get one and have while i am driving on the track just in case. Whats the best size and place to mount one.

Do a search and you'll find locations where others have mounted. From what I've seen; front of seat, center console cup holder area and roll cage mounting options.

You want it to be secure so it doesn't fly out and hit your head in case of an accident. But you also want it easily accessible. But you don't want it in the way of anything. Not an easy thing to accomplish. The best I've seen are mounted to a roll cage behind the driver or mounted near the seat bracket in the footwells like rb6freak has shown.

Also look for auto specific fire extinguishers. You would want a BC which would cover oil/liquid and electrical fires. The A covers wood and compost like items. The stuff inside ABC extinguishers causes damage to a car electrical and metal components, so just BC are recommended. You would also ideally want something with Halon or Halotron inside as well, though they get a little more expensive.

I've been seeing lots of car fires recently so it made me strongly consider getting one. Both cars were totalled. The STI just finished an autocross run and it caught fire. It was determined it had a fuel link leak and caused significant engine compartment damage. I think $15k in repairs. The Evo on the track was a 100% complete loss. All that was left was a shell of the car, though they managed to save the wing spoiler, haha. I wish I could find the picture.

Anyway, I went with a BC and had to put it inside a compartment located in the trunk of my track car. Not an ideal location since its not as accessible, but I couldn't find a better place to mount it that wouldn't get in the way.

Rollbar/cage or a street car?


If a bar/caged car just pony up the extra and install a FSS with 2 nozzles (engine/driver compartment), 3 if you are using a fuel cell mounted to be accessible in the cable/trunk.


Since that is extremely unlikely, there are many options to mount them to sheet metal. USE REINFORCEMENT PLATES. You do not want to use 1/2" washers and have it slam into your head in an accident.

I agree that a fire extinguisher is a good thing to have. Just be aware that in a real issue, the 2.5lb ones we bolt to things are unlikely to put out the fire; only delay it (hopefully until someone arrives with a beefy one with some real oomf). At an auto cross we had a guy pop off a fuel line. We fully unloaded most of the extinguishers (I think there was a total of 10 there) on the car and the fire kept going until someone figured out that the ignition was still on.

Now a real, permanent system will do a hell of alot more and help keep you from being burned (by dousing you in retardant), but that is getting into track only/real race car territory.

There was a BRZ which burned down to bare metal last Sunday at the new Thunderhill West. Since then, I've been thinking of getting an extinguisher as well.

Out of curiosity, any idea what caused the BRZ to burn? Did it have a modified fuel system?

I dont think a small in-car extinguisher would have stopped that one, as the fuel and heat source were the cause, and an extinguisher would not eliminate those...
