Effects of driving at high revs daily
 

I got a brz recently up from a honda fit.


I'm not too disappointed with the acceleration like most, however now that im out of break-in i find it hard not to go above 4k rpm. Around 4.5k the car really picks up.


My question is how much damage am I doing bringing it up to 6-6.5 to shift frequently? Its hard to keep the revs low with 151 lb/torque.

Your wallet will be lighter and your smile will be wider.

As far as I know the car was designed to be used in its entire rev range. Unless you're constantly bouncing off the rev limiter, you should be okay.

Keep your oil changed at regular intervals and you should be fine.

I think you're fine. No point in having a nice car and driving like a grandma. Have your fun, the car wants you to. :)

No problem with that, so long as you aren't redlining all the time. Some will argue it is even better longevity-wise, as it exercises the full RPM range. Many cars that were "grandma'd" seem to have issues much later on in life (>100k miles) if they were never used in the higher revs.

rev it up till the vtec kicks in, somewhere around 8.5k.

I shift around 4-5k rpm normally, but when I'm actively accelerating I'll take her up past 6k. Just too much fun not to! But if you're not accelerating with urgency, no need to shift late and cruise at high rpms.

Only issue I could see is a mis-shift. If you're up at 6500 rpm and shift to the next gear up but hit the gear below instead by mistake, you're going to redline the engine and possibly cause damage. Not sure when this would happen though. You're not exactly going to get it close to first gear from second at those speeds, third to fourth is a no-miss, and 4th gear at 6500 rpm probably won't happen often.

6K? You haven't even hit the torque peak. Wind it to redline as often as you like. No harm.

Actually, I meant going 4-3 instead of 4-5 by mistake. 7k in 4th would be around 8500 rpm in 3rd, so - boom? (at 100mph)

It's weird, I've been testing my mileage (km's) per tank and I see little to no difference with driving conservatively vs high revving. So I just choose the latter because this car is way more fun.

The FA20 is designed to rev , but no engine survives high revving during warm up.
Just warm it up first and try not to lose the license to drive!
