Window rubber seal causing squeaking sound?
My car has 21k miles on it and I've owned it since Dec 2012. Recently I've been having a problem with a squeaking sound just as the window fully closes. At first I thought it was just dirty and caused extra friction causing the sound but after it never went away even when I tried cleaning it with alcohol pads and other APCs and even lubricated it with WD-40 I realized it wasn't going away. When you touch the rubber it is clear that it feels "stickier" on a certain part and doesn't seem like it will go away.
Basically as the window fully closes it catches the rubber and pulls it upwards and upon further inspection it look like the rubber has permanently deformed slightly. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem or know what I can do to fix it? Will the dealer fix this under warranty? I have messed around with the rubber before (pulled it out and pushed it back in) which may or may not have caused it to start rubbing.. |
It (deforming) happened to my driver side and I got it replaced under warranty.

Yep. Mine's been doing this for a few months. No issue with the quality of the seal... but it's a minor annoyance.
I've also heard that it's warranty-able, but if there isn't a proper resolution with Subaru, it's a waste of time (to me). |

A more complex fix is to adjust the window angle. There's a bolt in the door that adjusts the angle of the window so that it may not pinch. It involves taking the interior door panel off. Apparently some of the dealer mechanics have no idea how to do it, so you might have to find the thread on here where one of the members did it himself and took a picture. If it were me, I would have the dealer replace the seals under warranty (to get rid of the pinched seal you have now) and then Armorall the replacement seals once per week thereafter to see if that fixes it. If not, then move to the window adjustment. |
Quality control fail. I'm glad it's a known issue at least and I can possibly have it replaced. I might try the armorall on both sides if they replace it to prevent it from occuring again.
