Third to Second Jackhammer Noise

Hi guys, So I bought a 2015 Scion FRS maybe 3 weeks ago, its got aroung 550 KMs on it; however, I've experienced this issue twice. Let me first preface this by saying that, yes, my foot is all the way to the ground and no it does not have that distinct gear grinding sound.

In my 550 Kms driven, twice on my shifts from third to second I have gotten this weird resistance in the shifter followed by a noise that sounds like a jackhammer under the car. I do not believe the noise is RPM dependent. Upon hearing this noise I put the car in neutral and then put it back in gear with no problems afterwards.

I think this could be because the gear is not fully engaging, ie: the stick might be half way from neutral to second but I'm not entirely sure whats going on.

My questions are: What do you think this issue is? And do you think it is doing serious damage to my car? I mean, it's happened twice now and the noise probably happened for 1 or 2 seconds before I immediately put it to neutral to stop the noise, but it's bothering me to know that this may be doing damage to my car.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might try double clutching and/or rev matching.

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest you take it back to the dealer for a look see.

While you you are there, ask them if you could drive another FR-S MT, to see if it does the same thing (confirming or sorting out pilot error ....:)).

Is it a crunching kind of feeling? Can you post a sound clip? Like most everyone else, I had difficulties with 2nd as well. But after replacing the tranny and diff fluid with motul 300, things got a lot better. Then with another 2000 miles or so things got smoother.

It's not a crunching noise, it's a metal on metal sound... like a jackhammer. Like this.. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0piYZOLjiwQ"]jackhammer sound - presslufthammer geräusch - rumore martello pneumatico - YouTube[/ame]

Is it hard to change transmission fluid?

It's easy to change the fluid, but I would recommend for you to put some more miles on it, and see if it gets better. It's a brand new car, so all the parts need time to wear in.
