Removing crank pulley on automatic
 

I've read the threads but haven't found a definitive way to remove the crank pulley on an auto. I checked Orielly and they don't have a tool to hold it in place.

My impact wrench won't fit although I'm tempted to buy and try a right angle impact.

How have you all removed your pulleys from an auto?

I see there is a tool available for purchase but since there are no bolt holes in the crank pulley, I have no idea how the tool would work.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

OK, so I ended up buying a rubber strap wrench from home depot for $10 and a 5 foot galvanized 3/4" pipe for $20. I used the strap wrench on the crank pulley - eventually it became wedged while I broke the nut gently free with the new 5 foot extension on my breaker bar.

In reverse I was able to properly torque it down to the specified 94 ft.lbs.

I have some pictures I'll upload tomorrow for future reference.

Hard to see what's going on but I pulled the strap tight then slowly turned until it wedged itself. The strap is in on the groves until the handle part where it came out to the outer smooth edge.

Recheck torque when the car is warm. It's also not just 94ftlbs, it's 14.5 ftlb then turn bolt 90 degrees as per the manual. I did 94ftlbs and had the bolt FALL OUT.

The crank pulley has 4 oval-shaped holes. What is needed is a metal stick (rod) with 2 large strong bolts screwed into it at different levels (one at the end, another circa 3-4 inches from the first one) so that they fit into any 2 of the holes on the crank pulley (each bolt into its own hole). This tool will allow you to hold the pulley in place while unsrewing the crankshaft bolt.

Unless your aftermarket pulley doesn't have these slots OR you have a kraftwerks SC (like I do) which has an adapter plate bolted onto the crank pulley which eliminates said slots (and ability to use said OEM tool)...

Did you have to use the strap wrench when installing the new pulley or just to pull it off?

I used a strap wrench to hold it for removing the stock pulley. I made a tool out of flat bar and some bolts covered with air line tube to install the new one (You could buy one)
