2015 brz blue series engine chirp
 

So I'm still in the break in period for my blue series and I've read about the chirp that emits from the engine. I'm under 700 miles right now and the chirp is insanely loud at idle. Should I bring this thing in for them to fix it or is it something I should just take with a grain of salt? Thanks for the help!

It's not fixable. The chip comes from using gas with ethanol in it. Use ethanol free gas (search internet to find them) and the issue goes away. The dealer will replace your fuel pump but the chirp immediately comes back so there's no point in letting a dealer touch your car and more than likely screw something else up in the process like some people that have taken their cars to the dealers.

It can't be based on ethanol fuel only because I got the chirp after a refuel and we don't have ethanol fuel in South Africa. However it seems to have gone away after 3/4 of the tank is used up

There is only one place in my area( San Jose, California) that sells ethanol free gas and it's 100 octane which runs almost twice as much as normal 91 gas prices. Guess I'll deal with the "cricket" noise if that's the case. Kind of lame considering the car is new and sounds like an old civic with 300k on the motor....

tl:dr; add some ashless two-stroke lubricating oil before you fill up at the gas station and it should get quieter. disclaimer: read the thread, and make your own decision.

I asked this in a other thread, is this just an annoyance or has there been reported failures or issues arising from it?

There is currently no fix for this. Other people tried the ashless whatever and Upper Cylinder lube. Some state it worked for them, some state it didn't.

I have my original fuel pump in my 2013 FRS. I occasionally get chirps but they never last. I live in California, so I get the same fuel as you do. What I've concluded from my own observation is that Ethanol doesn't cause it, or else people with E85 would be chirping all day everyday.

For my car, when I get lower than half tank, the chirps come. However, I fill up at Costco and never at other gas stations.

No failures.

I dealt with the same thing whether I was running 91 or E85. Adding 2-stroke oil (specifically TCW3) helped a lot. Crickets are now either much quieter, don't last as long, or aren't there as often.

It's very cheap, and I'm satisfied with how it is now. As background, I work at a Toyota dealership and the old high pressure fuel pump number was superseded sometime late last year (Nov-Dec 2013). People have gotten it replaced with the updated unit, only for it to come back within 1,000 miles. You'll find some people even had it replaced 2-3 times, it always comes back.

There are a few reports of cars with higher mileage (~20k+) where the crickets just disappeared. I doubt Toyota/Subaru is working on any new fixes.

I don't think STi makes HPFP. AFAIK, there is no aftermarket HPFP.

The ethanol free gas is a myth, it may work for some, but I've used nothing but ethanol free gas from day 1 and I have chirping.

I think it has something to do with the additives package that they add to gas. Here in North Carolina, virtually all of the gas that is sold regardless of brand comes from the Colonial Pipeline. Yet many folks have said that certain gas stations/brands give them the crickets while others don't. Since it is the exact same gas, the only difference would be in the additives that each brand uses. I guess it is also possible that the age of the gas you buy could have an effect since it is known that ethanol will readily absorb water.
