steering sensor
Anyone knows what happens when the steering sensor is unplugged, faulty or missing?
Is it only the abs and vsc that will be affected or will the power steering be affected too? |
I'm going to guess not good things. The car is drive by wire, is it not?
In what case would you want to unplug the sensor? |
Do you mean the angle sensor AKA the clock spring?
If yes the ABS and tracktion control and VSC programs will not function and you will get them all and a CEL on the dash. |

Basically in the Toyobaru an electric motor is attached to the steering shaft that helps you turn the wheel, similar to hydraulic power steering systems if it fails you can still turn the wheels it just takes a lot more effort to do so. I know Nissan is the leader in steer by wire systems but just found out they have it on the streets already: http://gizmodo.com/what-its-like-to-...ire-1501915995 The failsafe is a clutch that decouples the steering wheel from the actual input shaft, if there is a failure in the system the clutch engages the two shafts together and you have 'standard' steering again. |
Thanks @strat61caster, you learn something new everyday! Thanks for the good read.
And yes I was talking about steer by wire. |
the thing is we are building a race car and it seems like the clock spring where the steering angle sensor is, doesn't work. I want to know if like Khorne said, all the things that won't work are vsc, abs and traction control (which we all disable anyway) and i don't mind about the cel.
So the electric steering assist should still work? I can't try it as the car is in pieces now but i want to know what i need to put back or not. Anyone knows if the clock spring need to be changed when an air bag deploys? |
Would like to update this thread:
The removal of clock spring DOES NOT take away power steering. Looks like only things effected are ABS & VSC |
