Hey guys quick question I'm going to go look at some used springs 1000 miles on them , whqt should I look for on the used springs???

Nothing. Buy coilovers. You're going to blow your struts faster than you should.

Someone here just blew a strut while still under the 36mo/36k miles.

I don't have the answer but you probably shouldn't listen to that guy. Springs have a much deserved place in the aftermarket and just like coilovers, there are well executed and poorly executed examples

I'm really considering a swift spring/bilstein strut combo. For what I do I don't think I need more than that

He wasn't asking whether or not he should get springs or coilovers. Coilovers are not for everyone, and some springs perform better than some coilovers, especially if you are keeping the stock wheels and tires.

As far as what to look for, paint quality, if they are beat to hell or not, ask lots of questions. You should be fine.

I don't think springs out perform coilovers in any instance.

Depends on the springs. The springs the drops too far can cause premature wear. Not all springs are created equal. Not all coilovers are created equal.

For around $200 I picked up a set of the eibach pro kits. They offer about an inch drop and were designed to use the stock assembly. They are near perfect in my mind for the price.

Coilovers offer a slimmer profile than stock so you can usually run a wider more aggressive tire. Most coilovers also offer adjustibility and provide a better ride if the drop is significant as compared to stock.

To say that springs are a waste of money is inaccurate. Like most mods, it depends on the results you're looking for.

They aren't a waste of money, they're a poor investment. Once those struts blow, you'll be paying money again for either new struts or coilovers. I would skip the springs and go straight to the coilovers to not pay twice.

Of course... Feel free to invest in whatever you like.

And yes, one of those threads I posted had a strut failure with eibach springs. So be wary yourself.

OP about the only thing you can "test" would simply be, do they look good? Is all the paint scraped/rubbed off?

I personally am planning on eibach pros.

Those threads cite improper installation as the cause of strut failure.

Sadly, the likelihood of improper installation on the coilovers is much higher than the springs. Its nearly impossible for the avg dude to get them dialed in right.

Sounds like someone has been off drinking the Kool aid.

If your worried about a blown strut buy TRD, have Toyota install them.


Strut blows, your covered. The TRD springs are designed for the stock strut and have been discovered to be rebranded Eibach.

with this reasoning, nobody should be buying anything south of jrz or penske triples. $200 springs are a much better investment than coilovers costing 8 times more money. also, in the second thread you provided there is a person who blew the strut on stock springs even sooner. if that post is evidence of anything, its that you should upgrade shocks stat to preserve your shocks. i dont believe that at all but it goes to show that anecdotal evidence doesnt indicate let alone prove anything

No, the car is engineered to have this motor fitted to the chassis. The car is not engineered to be fitted with aftermarket springs. This causes extra wear and tear on the strut/shocks which will lead to premature failure.

As I said again... feel free to invest in whatever you want.

The OP must consider that a faulty install could also result in a blown strut/shock which means spending more money.

Koni yellow shocks are about 650 dollars for the entire set, add in 200 dollars for the springs = 850 dollars.

You can buy megan ez racing coilovers for 680 dollars on ft86speedfactory. Tien are only 830. You're saving 170 dollars or 20 dollars.

That 170 dollars is a significant amount of money for another mod.
