Going to larger wheels
 

Ok, I'm sure this has been covered on here somewhere but I can't find it. Back in the day when we used to put taller tires on our muscle cars we always had to try and find the proper gear to replace in the tranny so the speedo would read correctly(or when changing rear diff gearing). If I put larger rims and taller tires on my FRS to fill our the wheel wells, is there a way to program that to the speedo so it reads correctly? If so how?

Why would you go with larger tires in the first place...typically you want to stay the same height...or damn close

You are going to lose acceleration with larger/taller sized wheels and tires.. Smaller wheels and tires will effectively lower the final gear for better accel..
I think the speedo will be fine as it's calculated at final drive.

I've always liked the way they look when it fills the wells a little more, but I don't think I want to lower the car any(afraid of going over speed bumps now). Been looking at to many custom/tuner mags, like the look of 19' & 20" rims :-)

So... you want to replace gear in transmission just to run larger diameter wheels?

You should honestly be fine with maybe some springs and 18 inch wheels with maybe 225/40. I'm lowered on coilovers with filled wells and have no problems with speedbumps. There is a whole bunch of clearance.

If you went with 19 or 20 inch rims WITH larger tires I think you'll look like this lol:

No, I just want my speedo to read correct if I go to a taller wheel. 30 years ago when I used to play with cars, we'd have to change the input gear at the tranny if you made a gear change or tire change so the speedo was correct. Because everything is electronic, I'm guessing there's a way to change the programming to compensate. Having a new car is making me feel old!!!

im pretty sure that nobody so far in this thread has a very good understanding of the concepts at play. i think the bottom line is that its a pretty bad idea. check the suspension forums or build threads. i think you might like the way the oem outer diameter fills the wheel wells once the car is lowered and its a much more hassle free process that can provide benefits outside of aesthetics with minimal downsides.

I think you bought the wrong car for this...

Typically when you go to larger wheels, you go with lower-profile tires so the overall diameter doesn't change much, leaving the gearing and speedometer accuracy essentially unchanged.

That said, larger wheels work to your detriment, at least until you start making another 50+ horsepower. You might find this interesting:

18"s will fill the wheel well quite nicely. Take a look around at other peoples' cars like suggested and come to your own conclusion. Also, 18"'s won't set the speedometer off by any noticeable amount.
