It doesn't say the government is tracking this info. Just that it is available via black box. I for one think that's awesome. It will stop the crazyness of "the car launched itself when I hit the brake" when they really hit the gas. It will also make it easier in a court of law to determine who was doing what at time of impact. If you drive well and the accident is really "not your fault" then you have nothing to fear by having data available to back you up.

I'm all for this kind of thing if it doesn't add to the cost to much. It is these black boxes that got Toyota out of their acceleration issues.

I agree with you... :)... some people don't like it because they think 'Big Brother' is watching...They have been on some vehicles since the mid 2000's...but some people didn't know ..:)

Why re-post in technical?

It's only 30 seconds of data and it's only saved in the event of an accident (i.e. airbag deployment). I don't see what the big deal is.

Now if it were constantly transmitting telemetry and every mile was being recorded somewhere, THEN I'd be concerned. But 30 seconds that's constantly being overwritten?

If you're that paranoid, then be sure to drive normally for 30 seconds before you're pulled over ("I was looking for a safe place to stop") or drop the car off for service. But really, you're just being paranoid.

If you're that paranoid about the EDR you might as well start scratching off the VIN numbers on your vehicle too.

As long as it doesn't stream my speed and telemetry to the local police... But I think the problem is that people can use this as evidence against you by saying, "See, he was speeding before the crash so it was his fault," which wouldn't necessarily be true or fair...

Most of Toyota models are from 5-10 sec. I don't expect this one to be 30 sec.

Owner's manual (as pictured in the first post) says 30 seconds.
