Where are all the high lift/duration camshafts!
Been almost two years now and no one has developed a performance camshaft for the FA20 yet? Seems like a huge untapped market. :iono:

I've also started a thread on this topic. There are some out there but the gains for the work don't seem justified yet. I think once we really dial in the best bolt ons and tunes the cam market will start to take off.
Unlike the 15 minute K20 cam change (http://cms.skunk2.com/id/377/15-Minute-K-Cam-Swap/) we basically have to pull the motor to do cams. That's a big deterrent if someone is going to pay to have them put in. |
I think thats the main issue
unless you're prepared to put the revs up and risk blowing the motor then the gains from cams aren't worth the $1500 bill to pull the engine out and fit new items as best I've seen so far is about 8 bhp from dev cams and when a supercharger kit gives 80 bhp for $4000 you're better off putting the cash towards that |
BTW, k20 camshafts took a solid 8-10 years to come to the market with stuff that was actually good. It was around 4 years before there was even a camshaft that didn't mess things up and make more power than stock cams.
Bolt-ons also came a LOOOOOOOOONG way in extracting power out of stock cams. early k20 setups made 220-230 whp WITH cams Now they make that with bolt-ons and camshafts have moved up to the 240-250 whp range. You're definitely going to be waiting a while. |
I think our best bet is TRD at this point. They are using a set of cams in their griffon car. Hopefully with their budget they figure out a way to make power that other manufacturers can piggyback off.
Cams will always be a big project on this car. I plan to do springs, valves, retainers, balancing and head work when I finally crack the block open to do the cams. Maybe even pistons and rods by then? Higher compression maybe? Who knows at this point. |

BC already has cams developed, already tested on a turbo application. They are now testing it on an NA application iirc

I have been investigating this subject for about a year.
I know of a few companies working on R&D but no solid results. Our largest problem is valve to piston clearance. Even with HKS They say you MUST use their pistons with the cams. Probably because with stock pistons you mangle the internals. I just put my order in for my pistons and allowed for future upgrades with a larger lift and duration. Hoping someone delivers in the near future. :sigh: |
