Grinding Gears + New Trans

Car started to grind gears shifting from 5th to 6th and various other methods during higher RPM shifts.

Brought my 2013 limited BRZ into my local dealer and within 10 minutes a tech drove with me in the car, felt the issues, and ordered me a new trans.

While this sucks.. I'm glad I was able to get a warranty replacement so quickly and easily with no hassle whatsoever.

Here's hoping for better luck with the new one. :iono:

Edit: have 8k miles on the car

Well, let's hope the new transmission lasts longer .....:)

Do they have any idea of what went wrong with the old one .. ??

Nope.. they are a relatively small dealer that hasn't sold many BRZ's.. so I'm assuming they're just going to swap it and return the tranny to Suby for diagnostics.. but I doubt I will ever find out the true cause. The fact that they were able to get a trans so quickly leads me to believe that this is a somewhat known issue.

Or, maybe they just keep a transmission on hand as a "rebuilt" (one that they fill up with axle grease and banana peals) ..... and slap that one in the next car that has a transmission problem .... oh, never mind ..... that was an old trick ..... :D

Heard this cause was the trans fluid they used, knock on wood my car shifts smoothly and I even did a clutch pedal adjustment half the time I flat foot shift lol.

I had an issue with my tranny also. But it was a 4th gear grind at high RPM. I'm getting it warrantied this week. I have a friend with a FR-S with 30K miles on the car with no grinds whatsoever, so I don't think every tranny suffers from this problem.

I'm getting the new tranny installed Wedneday. Lets hope the grind doesn't return!

Mine almost always grinds while cruising in 5th and then shifting into 6th.

A little birdie informed me that the Aisin 6MT in these cars is S-H-I-T :)

The only thing left on the table is a TSB

Had the same thing happen to mine at similar mileage (6k). I have a thread that I started somewhere around here and the same deal, shifting from 5th to 6th. I had it replaced and so far no issues, now at 12k. Here's to hoping that is it.

Same thing here. Got a new transmission and it works great.
No more grind.

Do you have some secret inside information or is this just hearsay/opinion?

There do seem to be a lot of people with tranny problems here on the boards, but if that's representative of total numbers, the vast majority are working perfectly fine.

No secret info. Based on what I've heard recently about 86 owners taking their cars to the local dealerships here for problems with the MT (I don't believe them to be forum members), based on the consistent 1st gear, 2nd gear and 5th gear problems from multiple members on this forum and based on my most recent experiences with my own rock tumbler box.

Taking into account some opinions from a good source, I would not be surprised at all about a TSB being issued for the MT. Maybe in the next 6 months?? Who knows..

What I do know is that I'm never buying a 1st year car again. 2nd year maybe. 3rd year better.

This thread regarding a grinding 4th and 6th gear mentioned a TSB 03-71-13. Might be related if someone can link the TSB PDF.

They're shit. Either that, or the fluids they used were shit. Mine ate the synchros by 5000 miles without any tracking or beating it up. When they drained it the fluid was filled with metal shavings. Numerous other people in here have had the same problem and tranny replacements.
