Clutch discussion

Now that my car is boosted, I'm going to look into upgrading the clutch. I think I want to go with an organic clutch to keep it close to OEM in feel, and I don't have any plans to go over 300whp.

Right now I'm considering the AVO Stage 1 or the Exedy Stage 1. I've read that their rated torque holding capabilities are in the low 200's, but people have put much more power through them without any troubles. My main concern is driveability.

Any other suggestions?

I have the Exedy stage 1 clutch. Im boosted with 415whp/314wtq and have had no issues at all. However its going to have a different feel than stock. The peddle feel is lighter. Either way tho, its a good idea to upgrade the clutch if you are boosted!

Just gonna say go with the exedy stage one...oem feel and high underated on holding power

That was the info I was looking for. The act was on the radar too, bit if the exedy will take 300, then I can just go with it

Thanks for the info!

Does that come with a flywheel?

this is a tad irrelevant to this but i had a exedy stg 1 on my civic years ago. loved the driveability but i boosted it up to 280whp on a 1.6l dohc. blew the disc springs out with only 3000miles on it

Irrelevant indeed, a stage 1 on a civic is not at all comparable to a stage 1 on a frs/brz. Cross platform comparisons really don't work like that :P

So exedy stage 1 will hold how much tq?

Zach3794 02-28-2014 01:56 AM

Rated at next to nothing, limit apparently hasn't been found in real world applications though. Apparently held up fine on ptuning's car at 400whp/300tq. This makes it perfect for me as my car is just a supercharged daily :P

Spec Stage 3. Good for 350+

DesertFrs 02-28-2014 12:17 PM

Although the Exedy Stage 1 clutch is rated at 203tq @ wheels it has shown to last up until 320tq before you see any slip. The AVO Organic Clutch holds about the same maybe a bit more. While both kits give you a clutch pedal feel close to OEM.

Personally not a fan of Spec on ANY application I have used them on. I'm not typically one to bash on brands but i did my due diligence with them trying to give them a chance to redeem their products on several vehicle platforms and they always land as least favorite in feel, quality, hold ratings, and cost from my personal use of them.

I currently have the ACT street clutch on mine (just trying it out) and as far as street its near identical to stock minus a heavier clutch pedal. It can get slightly chattery if heated but that's not a common occurrence. Even when it does its very mild. It grabs and goes without any slip.

I will be installing an Exedy on another BRZ in 2 weeks so obviously I feel they have a good product as well.
