Transmission fluid change from dealership?

So, I've seen numerous posts about changing your transmission fluid as soon as possible. I'm still under warranty so I thought of making an appointment at my local Toyota/Scion dealership for changing my tranny fluid.

I'm a little on the fence about this because I've also seen people running into problems caused by the mechanics at the dealership. What do you guys think?

Do you have a MT or AT .. ??

Assuming a MT, is it shifting smoothly .. ??

If not, you may wish to consider an alternative fluid (to the Toyota stuff).

As far as having the dealership change the fluid, it's a fairly straight forward procedure. Drain the old fluid out through the only plug on the bottom, replace drain plug, add fluid through the filler hole, till it won't take anymore, replace the plug. Only two moving parts, so, as long as they don't cross thread the plugs ..... you're good to go.

MT, I wouldn't say smoothly. Every now and then I grind into gear, especially into 3rd.

i looked into changing the fluid myself but you need a fluid pump, which i do not have lol

I believe he meant on the transmission.
There are 2, I believe 10mm hex head (I could be wrong on the size) plugs that are on the drivers side of the manual transmission casing. One is towards the rear of the case and very low and the other is more forward and higher up. Front to fill and rear to drain.

Ideally you would want to have the car on ramps or something so that it is sitting fairly flat to do the drain and fill. Its really no more difficult than changing the engine oil, other than its a little more cramped.

Well, if you do feel it is necessary to change the transmission oil and either the dealership won't do it ..... or you don't trust them to do it correctly, I'm sure a local automotive shop would be up to the task ... :)

The general consensus on the form would say it's a good idea to do a fluid change on the transmission. Many people have been having issues with shifting, gear noise, etc. The majority of the time changing fluids will help.

These are the main brands most people use on the form:
-Motul
-AMSOIL
-Pentosin
-Red Line

Also, you might want to check out MTEC's new shifter springs. I just bought some myself but haven't used them yet. I hear they are pretty nice!

Why is that

You don't need a pump whatever oil you use. Just buy a funnel, and about 3 ft of hose to fit on the end of the funnel, and that is small enough diameter to fit through the filler hole. Pass through the engine bay from the top and into the filler hole then pour the oil in.
Oil pumps are a PITA and never seem to work well.
