MTEC Shifter Spring Questions & Comments
Hey again! So I'm about to do an install for the MTEC Shifter springs on my FRS. I've seen the install video and it seems pretty straight forward but would like to see if anyone would like to share there experience with the shifter springs after install and also quick tips when installing them. Thanks!

Love mine. I have a Kartboy shifter also. The plugs are a pain to get out, it will take some muscle to break them loose since they have a "Loc Tite" type material on them. The driver's side was impossible to get a torque wrench on, there's not enough room between the transmission and the body to get a torque wrench in, so I just guesstimated and tightened it up. The passenger side with need a universal joint in there with an extension to get to that plug. All in all a worthwhile investment.

Its much easier with the exhaust out of the way but it can be done with it still in place. I didn't need a universal joint like mentioned to torque the plug but I did struggle with getting the passenger side threaded back in because of the excess loctite.
Get yourself some shop rags and brake cleaner if you don't have some already to clean off the loctite. Make sure you hand thread that bolt back in before you start wrenching down on it and you'll be fine. |
Get yourself a 10mm Allen socket and a deep well 1/2" drive break over bar with a deep well 12 point 27mm or 1 1/16" socket. It really isn't that tight, but the thread locking compound is considerable to break loose on the big fitting. Easy easy job to do if you have any experience with tools.

They're great. The only pita is the one big bolt near the top of the transmission. It took a breaker bar and a lot of elbow grease to get off. Aside from that the install is about as simple as it gets.

I stripped my trans threads of the passenger side....shop say can tap without taking trans down...

It helps to us a pick and scrap some of the loctite off the bolt.
|
Clean up the bolts to get the green loctite off before reinstalling. DO NOT TIGHTEN with a wrench until you've hand threaded them and are 100% sure the bolts are lined up, or you will strip it. Get it tight and torque to the correct specs. Be patient, the big detent can be a bitch to get a wrench on, and once you do it takes some muscle to break loose.

that 27mm bolt was a piece of cake for me to get loose,
it took me longer to get the damn bolt up there and threaded then it did for me to loosen it i honeslty thought the intall was super super easy, pretty straight forward |
Just do it. I love how this 30$ mod makes the shifter that much better with crisper throws and some stiffness as well. No other mods are needed besides this little gem.
