koni yellow question
 
so ive been trying to look around and figure out what i want to do for suspension. I autocross when I can but plan on doing it much more often. Everybody with recommendations says to go with the koni yellows. So I wanted to order them and found the word inserts. After figuring out what the hell that meant, I dont think i want to go that route. I also read on here that Koni was going to be making a set that did not have inserts and were just bolt on ready to go. Has this happened? Does anybody know if it is going to happen? The posts I read were from 2012 and I cant seem to find anything online that arent inserts other than aftermarket built coilovers USING konis..

So any suggestions on what to do? I have eibach springs coming in for a 1 inch drop.. I come for the world of lifting jeeps so this is all a bit new to me haha

Bilstein has two lines of struts/shocks out (or coming out VERY soon). They're drop in solutions, not inserts like the Koni fronts. They're not cheap, but they're worth it if you want quality dampers.

If you're going to get more serious about autox, I would honestly look at other spring options than eibach. Nothing against eibach, but there are better options for autox out there.

That link shows the two front are inserts.

I have the koni's and have no issues with them. I bought a second set of front struts used for like $50, and that's what I used to cut.

Koni said they were releasing a front strut replacement (direct bolt-on, no cutting/inserts) on the 2002 WRX way back.

They still haven't released that unicorn product.

anywhere to get them specifically or did you find somebody that did coilovers or something and was just looking to get rid of them? I mean ill try doing the inserts because it doesnt look hard; just only if i can get another set of front struts for cheap.. which I didnt think they would go that cheap.

so its not happening. at least not soon. haha any other companies you guys know of that do direct bolt on that are decent? I dont know enough about suspension to know good from bad.

Bilstein just released a set of front+rear dampers that are direct replacement. I think they're something like $900 for the set, though, so there's that.

First off, I love all your posts! You seem very knowledgeable! What would be a better spring option? I have eibach pros and I'm not opposed to swapping them out for something better. Also been playing with the idea of getting something like a KW V1 as it would just be a touch more, but I'm worried this will be too much of a street only coilover. I too will be doing the occasional autox and open track event. I know little about the adjustment, which is why I wouldn't dump money into an adjustable coilover like a V3, but on more track time and tires. Help would be amazing! :cheers:

In all honesty, it depends on what you want out of the springs.

I would personally go with either RCE yellows or Swift sport springs on stock struts. If you're going with Bilstein or Koni's, I'd also look at RCE Tarmac springs.

If you want coilovers and like KW but want more track focus, look at the RCE T0 or TII. TO's are stiffer versions of KW V1's and TII's are stiffer versions of KW V3's. Both the T0 and TII are made by KW, so there's no difference in quality. Since you're far from a snowy area, you could also look at the ST coilovers, they're apparently comparable to V1's but less money (not stainless, just zinc coated).

i mean the konis were something around the high 600s i believe so if the quality is that much better and they are also direct replacement... seems somewhat justifiable?

$300 to not hack up the stock struts doesn't seem outlandish to me, this way you still have the usable stock parts if you ever want to return to stock.
