EVO: GT86 TRD vs Miata MX-5 BBR Turbo
Richard Meaden compares the Toyota GT86 TRD against the BBR Mazda MX-5 on track at Blyton Park. Prepare to see some rather sideways action.

No huge suprises.
Seems like he feels the GT86 is maybe a slightly better drivers car but not enough power which the little turbo Miata makes up for. He also mentions just how overpriced TRD makes the car. I noticed that he appeared to be struggling to stay seated properly in the Miata. |
Let me guess, another Evo review where the GT86 loses? Typical Evo. For a magazine that purports to dislike the GT86/BRZ as much as they do, they sure are obsessed with it.
And why would you compare a factory TRD GT86 against a 3rd-party tuned Miata? Obviously a Miata built by an aftermarket performance shop is going to be cheaper and faster than a GT86 fitted only with TRD pieces. I feel like Evo just does it to troll at this point. |
Worthless comparison. Notice that the GT86 only comes in 1.8 seconds slower than a fully tuned Miata with 270hp. :)

I hate these kind of reviews that try to make it fair, but it really isn't. Give the FR-S a Vortech supercharger or Greddy turbo to make it even. Then compare. It's OEM+ against 3rd party, and it's not a fair comparison that way. However, it really wasn't that much faster.

If anything this shows just how overpriced TRD crap from the factory is. Also even with a 70hp disadvantage the GT86 is only 1.8 seconds slower. |

Both cars are GREAT cars. We are blessed to be able to buy either of these cars under $30k in the States.
Don't give much crap about this comparison though. Weird comparo imo. |
So the 'TRD' GT86 has a body kit, new shift knob and gas cap. Quad exhaust and possibly heavier 18" wheels. Evo said the TRD edition uses Yokohama Advans, but the video has Michelin PS3? Odd discrepancy.
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc..._pictures.html Plus in many ways, the TRD version is slower than a standard 86/BRZ. http://www.autocar.co.uk/blogs/new-c...efinitely-more Evo can get back to us on that Miata when they put better brakes and suspension on the 86 with another 70hp/70lbft. |
It throws me off when they talk about the GT86 being familiar or being out for a while now... I always look at it like it just came out only a few months ago haha
|
It is a pointless comparison. They should do third party Miata tuned to third party GT86 tuned.
Like one of these cars that Top Gear looked into: http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/s...ive-2013-10-16 |
I watched this the other day and thought wow what a load of crap. They're comparing a body kit to a turbo kit.
