Forester engine in BRZ?
Can the 250 hp version of the fa20 be put in the BRZ? I am a noob and so I ask although I tend to think that the obvious answer is yes.
If so, is that something many people would be doing rather than picking up after-market parts? What about you? Why or why not? If they put that motor in the 2016 Brz would you rather buy that or buy a 2014 brz and mod it via aftermarket FI for more than 250 hp. Thanks. |
If I remember right, isn't the turbo in the FXT bottom mounted? If so, there wouldn't be room in the BRZ...

Pros: Boxer engine, Subaru built, same basic mounting points
Cons: It's a new engine in a new car, costs waaay more money than other options (aftermarket FI, more available engine like LS or EJ). The piping doesn't work out with the space in the Toyobaru, you would have to replumb the whole thing, might as well do an aftermarket turbo for the amount of work required, the plumbing has already been worked out. Subaru Direct Injection vs. Toyota D4-S, not sure which ECU you would use not to mention the rest of the harness for all the Toyobaru's systems. Same block should have the same transmission mounts but that's not guaranteed considering the Forrester is CVT exclusive I believe Cons #1 & 2 are usually enough to dissuade most. If you want more power swap in a V8 or something cheap, simple, and available. If you want a turbo just go aftermarket bolt on with a tune. Both are immensely cheaper than getting Subaru's FA20T. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47004 Edit: Can't wait for these threads asking about the WRX's 268 hp motor :bonk: |

Now, if you have to replace a blown block and don't want to go built-motor yet, and already have a turbo kit, then if you can pick up one of these for about the same price as a fully built stock FA20 (block and headers).... THEN it'd make sense. Otherwise, nope. |

(Admittedly, it would still probably be not worth swapping the engine, since that's only one of several problems with the prospect, but it's still fun to think about...) |

It was already asked elsewhere (not sure if it was on ft86club or on iwsti), and that was the conclusion. Remember, compared to other subies, the twins are ridiculously low to the ground in general, and the engines in particular. |
So we would have to basically relocate the turbo and find a way for the A960E transmission that the Brz uses to work with the engine right?

I’m kinda in this scenario with my 13’Brz. Blew the motor, been trying to save 3.5k for a used stock Brz motor but some forester motors are going for 1500.

2. How are you going to get the ECU to run it? I could be done, but it would be a nightmare far beyond the average garage mechanic. 3. You are replying to a thread from 2014, pretty sure nobody has bothered with it beyond talking about it. |
Just get another FA20 or go big and do a proper LS- or K-swap

Sorry OP, but I think you're stuck saving up for a replacement BRZ/twin motor. With all the various things you'd have to come up with custom solutions to the Forester engine would wind up costing more. |
