Notchy Shifting
 

Looking for some advice here since I'm not as mechanically inclined.

So I've had my car for about a couple months now only 950 miles on it. I'm noticing that the shifting feels odd and like there's something in the way (notchy) as some would put it. Is the transmission notorious for that? It's most noticeable going from 1st, 2nd, to 3rd gear.

I mean the car goes into gear fine and it drives... just kind of concerned if it'll be a growing problem. The gears were grinded once by my dad who hasn't driven stick in 5 years and the grinding lasted about 5 seconds, even then I don't think it should ruin the synchros after one incident... should I have it checked out or is this normal? If I need to I'm hoping warranty would cover something like this.

Mine was pretty notchy for the first 1500-2000km's, it definitely gets better with some miles on it.

Mine has almost 50k km's now, and is still notchy into 2nd when it's cold, but once the fluids are warm it's fine.

get a weighted shift knob. it made a world of difference, and pretty much solved the notchiness completely for me (though i already had the mtec shift springs i doubt that had an effect).

Was thinking about doing that! Thanks guys, looks like I'm not the only one and probably flipping over something common

Many have reported notchy shifts, especially 1 to 2.

Does your transmission shift smoother when it's warm?

They usually smooth out with more use.

Some folks change the transmission fluid and find it shifts smoother.

A gear grind or two shouldn't mess up a transmission.

This is as designed. :) No worries. Heavier shift knob will help the issue as other have pointed out.

Part of the notchy shift feel is due to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd having triple cone synchros. They are much beefier and can handle more abuse, but as a result they feel more mechanical. The other part is because the shift mechanism is a direct mount to the transmission case, so there are no cables or additional connections to mask the mechanical feel. If the synchros are failing and not doing their job, the affected gear would begin to grind more and more frequently when selected.

It gets better after break-in and some WOT redline shifting. :burnrubber: Mine still has the factory fluid (because I can't find a shop that carries Motul or Pentosin) and now only the 1st gear is notchy. The rest are smooth as butter after warm up.

Gets better with miles as most have said on here. But def helps with rear shifter bushing and tranny bushing. I have kartboy rear bushing and whiteline tranny bushing. Also totally agree with tranny fluid swap:)

A rear shifter bushing also helps smooth it out and make shifts feel a bit more solid.

I just received my from the group buy and it makes a HUGE difference. I would definitely recommend one of these along with a fluid change as someone already suggested.

The knotchy shifting isn't completely gone, but it's a non issue now in my opinion.

I am convinced that what feeling is left, is just how its designed. No reason to worry anymore :) That said, feels good, worth the weight.
