Just cooked my ignition amplifier, immobilizer, need advice

Has anyone cooked there amplifier, immobilizer that wraps around the key ignition cylinder? I have ordered a new one, but I really don’t understand how this part works, does it need to be programmed? I feel completely in the dark on what this part does.

The OE repair manual does not state you need to program it, simply says to remove and install

Here is the copy.
1. INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
(a) Connect the connector.

(b) Attach the 2 claws to install the transponder key amplifier.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you do this?

Ah yeah, well the short version of the story is, My son and I are trying to install a viper alarm with the idata link modules and set up the remote start. Well, we don't quite have the entire wiring diagram put together, so we thought it would be a good idea to take a constant 12v wire and test the ignition module. Well, from my best guess, one of the wires that goes to the amplifier immobilizer takes less than a 12v current or signal, and poof, we toasted the circuit board on the amplifier immobilizer. needless to say, we had to put the alarm install on hold until the car starts again, and then start over. And as a learning experience, i should do more research and probably ask the forum(s) if anyone else has been successful first before i take a constant 12v and start jumping it to other wires. good news, it's not the most expensive mistake I've made. the new piece was only $70 from Toyota, however the Subaru dealer wanted $90, so that's a good piece of advice to take away as well.
