Looking at 2013 Used FR-S.....question

It has 11k on the clock and I am checking to see if the oil has ever been changed. I doubt it has and this is concerning me, by all appearances it was a commuter for 6 months. I have the vin, so I was going to call the dealer to see if they have a service record.

If the oil hasn't been changed how concerned should I be? Deal Breaker?

Why wouldn't the oil have been changed? Scion/Toyota will do it for free the first three times.

What is your time frame like? If you are in no rush, you could always send an oil sample to Blackstone and see if anything is floating around in there that shouldn't be.

We'll previous owners are an unknown quantity at times so no excuse for not taking advantage. I will call local dealer and ask about any service records. I assume the oil services are supposed to be done every 7500 right?

Decay107 01-19-2014 07:29 PM

Yes that's the recommended service interval.

FReSh 01-19-2014 08:51 PM

Why not ask the previous owner if they changed it?

Tiremonkey0824 01-19-2014 09:52 PM

You can call the dealer to verify, but what if the owner opted to change the oil themselves out of fear the dealer would take the car on a joy ride?

Captain Insano 01-19-2014 10:55 PM

Also the owner could lie and say they changed it. No I personally would not buy a car that had 11k miles on it if the oil had never been changed.

Sounds like you are a perfect candidate for buying a new car. There is no way to know the cars service history unless every single service was recorded by the dealer. Even invoices can be forged. If it is certified pre owned with the extra warranty, I don't see a problem. Just keep you own records from now on.

If it's a trade in the dealer should change the oil when they get it so that you think it's been done regularly. Clean oil must mean proper maintenance right?

Is the price difference worth it to you? Honestly 11k miles an no oil change isn't much. It's the oil level that I would be more concerned with. Dirty topped off oil is better than dirty not topped off oil. If it's clear then you would never know.

And the service records are only good if they used the free oil changes or used a dealer for the regular maintenance. I do my own personally because I don't want anyone else touching my car.

How much money are you saving by going used? If it's 5 grand of difference between used and new. Spend the extra money and buy a new one. You will be the one to break in the car. That's the beauty of going new. The damn thing is so new you can indeed find excellent used ones. Yet this is my second new car and there is nothing like knowing you are the only one that has been behind the steering wheel for any lengthy period of time.

I wouldn't buy one of these cars used.... you want to be the one who broke it in properly.

swift996 01-20-2014 12:09 PM

I wouldn't be drastically over-concerned. There's no reliable facts on "breaking one of these cars in."

Personally, I don't like to buy cars from idiots, if they don't take care of basic things, what else don't they do? Perhaps drop crap fuel in it? IDK, just speculating, it amazes me people neglect their cars so much. In all reality though a few thousand miles over isn't going to cause any real damage.
