Which Kit to Choose?
 
Hey guys

I've been throwing around the idea of a turbo kit for quite some time now. In the beginning, I'm only looking to make no more than 300hp. However, over time, that number will definitely rise more towards 400 as the engine internals are built. The problem I have is that I will mostly use the BRZ as a DD in most weather. From what I've read, people are saying that the smaller turbos put a bit more stress on the parts from the torque surge, versus a larger turbo. My understanding, from reading some posts here, is that if I used a turbo like the T3/4 it would put less stress on the parts versus a gt35 due to less of that torque surge. Given that I'm looking to make power reliability with a smooth powerband and not break too many parts, what kit(s) would you guys recommend?

These statements are contradictory. The T3/T4 is a small turbo compared to a GT35. The torque that you put down is what will put stress on the parts. Changing the size of the turbocharger only changes when that higher torque starts and how much of it there is. Just because a larger turbo takes longer to reach peak torque doesn't mean it puts less stress because eventually it will be putting down more peak torque than a smaller turbocharger.

I don't really know what torque surge is and how it would wreck a motor, but I haven't heard of many 300hp motors dying. Your biggest threat to the long life of your motor will be the quality of tuning on the fuel maps.

I will surely do that when I'm ready for a kit! East Rutherford is close to me also. Only about 20 minutes away

Not so much the motor, but more items such as the CV joints. I've seen some threads where the CV joints grenade themselves with (if i remember correctly) relatively low HP numbers. I want to avoid that as much as possible

@PrimeMotoring did my turbo install and JR did my tune(Amazing). There are so many kits to choose from. I daily drive my car about 60-70 miles a day and am very happy with my setup 266 on low boost and 329 on high boost on the mustang dyno. Call up Mike from Prime he can lead you in the right direction.

I was just researching about Prime Motoring and checking out their facebook page. Looks like they do some top notch work. I also saw some pictures of your exact car, that pink logo is unmistakable. What kit did you get? And are you running stock engine internals?

I have the FA20club UEL kit and love it, it's seems like they are taking a big hit nowadays with issues of their welding and time frame. I am on stock internals and I don't really have plans of going over 400whp, most important is tuning. What are your expectations of for your car, type of header setup, max hp wanted?

My initial plan is to just have around 270-300hp. I suppose i could try to make that work N/A, but I'm still definitely leaning towards the turbo route. I want good power with reliability, because its a car I use basically every day, thats why I don't want to push the limit too far on the stock internals. After keeping it around 300hp for a while, I'll probably put some forged internals into it and move on up to the 350-400hp range. I don't really see myself ever going over that amount of power. Also, with your kit, how much of a turbo lag do you experience? As is the nature of turbos, there is some delay versus a supercharger. I realize that tuning can limit the lag, and I have no doubt that Prime tuned your kit well. With that being said, how much lag is there with a well tuned kit like yours? I understand its a bit of a vague and general question lol

We'll if your seeking reliability you may want to consider a supercharger, friend of mine made 260whp on stock fuels sytem an tuned. I drive everyday and keep it on low boost, my boost starts in at about 3500rpms hits full boost at about 4200rpms.

Jackson Racing or Kraftwerks make good power and have a fairly linear powerband that shouldn't put a ton of extra stress on your driveline.

Where are you hearing this? There are guys that AutoX that are breaking CV joints who are all motor and plenty of people running various turbos that have had no CV issues.
