Oil Filter Locale?
1 Attachment(s)
So when gawking at pictures of the under hood of an FRS I saw the oil filter and though that putting It on top of the engine was ingenious! In my little Toyota truck you have to stick a screwdriver through the filter to get it out :mad0260:. But what about when you change the oil, isn't the oil going to come pouring out and get all over the engine?? Heres a pic below where you can see the black oil filter midway down right in the engine bay.

think it was discussed that it sits in a cup. so as long as you take it out slowly it should drain in the cup and not cause a mess.

We already have discussion, but... Nope, it won't.
If you look at current Toyota trucks you'll see same design for oil filter. When you want to change the filter, there's a lil tube that coming out around and you'll just connect it w some hose. It's easy & a lot cleaner to change oil filter this way |
So much more convenient than having it underneath and draining oil all over axles, hoses, electronics, etc. when you pull the filter! In my first MR2 the A/C compressor and exhaust header were both there to melt your hand if you tried removing the filter with the engine too hot. In my MR2 Turbo it was also near impossible to get a handle-type oil filter wrench over and have any room. Then I discovered the filter wrench that takes a 3/8" drive extension and wratchet... Still a PITA.

Way better than oil filter placement on the EJ. Exhaust manifolds WILL burn you.
|
Yeah, I much prefer this location/design. Just stick some paper towels under it after it drains out.
|
The only concern I have is with a bottom mounted oil filter, I can pre-fill the oil filter with oil before installing. With top mounted filter, we won't be able to do it anymore.
|
The only times I have to stick a screwdriver through a filter is if I take my car to one of those speedy-oil change places. Those guys either tighten to the point where you can't take it off or it is so loose that it vibrates off on your way home.

On my 93 MR2 with the upside down oil filter I just would poke a hole in the end with an awl so it'll drain out when I drain the rest of the oil. Then when I unscrew it... no oil to go everywhere.

Funny, this was the second thing I took apart on our car. I had to know if oil was going to dump out into the cup. NOPE!
http://blog.perrinperformance.com/wp...er-550x366.jpg No wiping up of anything! There is only one downfall. Dirt will get in there over time, so it may be one of those things where you have to wash/wipe out the dirt with each change. Not a big deal though. |
Looks like I will find out tomorrow.

Mobil M104 fits great!
|
This may be the greatest oil filter placement I have ever seen!!
