Timing chain issue?

My check engine light came on about a week after I bought the car, had less than 400 miles on it. Brought it to the dealership and they said it's something to do with the timing chain. I dropped it off today so they could really take a look at it.

Anyone else have this issue when it was brand new? Should I be worried it's something really bad?

hmmmm......assuming they read a code, do you know what it said ..??

Timing chains are usually pretty bullet proof, so maybe it was a CEL hiccup.

Let's hope for the best.

Sadly I don't know what the code was :( Should have plugged my reader into it, but I kept forgetting and putting it off :/

I don't think it will throw a code for a bad timing chain, there's nothing that reads the position of the chain afaik. The assumption would be a VVT pulley not returning to the proper position. Depending on the code it could be crank sensor, cam sensor, oil control valve, bad cam gear or a myriad of things.

It sounds like Shiro was having some possible timing chain issues as well:

Make sure your dealer documented your code while you were there. I'd ask them for more information, but typically it'd be listed on your service ticket.

Thanks for the help, thankfully I have not even had the chance to really mod the car, so my warranty is still good. I have the service request ticket in my rental, so I'll take a look at that to see if it says anything.

I'll be sure to ask lots of questions when I go pick it up. Hopefully it's a quick fix and I'll have her back Monday/Tuesday time frame.

Thanks for all the help everyone. @White64Goat hopefully it's not what you linked me. I don't want to keep taking the car to the dealership every other week. Plus I didn't really have an issue with weird idling/stalling in neutral. The CEL was on, and the traction control was stuck on as well. If I tried to use the cruise control the symbol for cruise would come and and stay on unless I turned the car off, and I was unable to set the cruise control.

I called the dealership today and found out there is something wrong with the car. The guy I talked to didn't know anything and said the guy working on my car is off today, but will be working on my car first thing tomorrow morning. Turns out a case will have to be opened on the car though and the tech reps will have to get involved. I plan on calling Toyota tomorrow first thing in the morning to get as much info as I can. I will post anything I find out tomorrow afternoon.

Called Toyota this morning and was able to get the fault code and name... P0018 Bank 2 cam position sensor A :(

Getting my car back today!

Ozzman 01-09-2014 11:01 PM

What was wrong with it?

BRZnut 01-09-2014 11:04 PM

I thought the cam issues were fixed by now???

Hardpack 01-10-2014 09:58 AM

So they swapped the sensors fro the cams to see if it was that and the problem was still there. They called tech support and that had them replace my ecu. Problem seems to be gone for now, so hopefully the issue is fixed.
