Timing belt shredded..?!

So I was driving yesterday to the dentist and all of a sudden started hearing a sound from the car, at first i thought it was clicking, but sounded more like a rubber slapping sound which increased with the revs and remained happening at idle.
Stopped the car, look int he engine, couldn't see anything odd.
Called dealership they told me to bring the car in. Halfway to the dealership the slapping stopped and battery light went on.

At the dealership they showed me the timing belt which was shredded. I asked why, they said probably because it skipped....
How does that happen on an engine that's under 26k?

At least warranty covers it

These cars use timing chains not belts. Either you misheard the dealer and he said accessory drive belt or he's an idiot. The accessory belt drives everything at the front of the engine including the alt, which would explain your batt light coming on

^^ This, it wouldn't be the timing belt even if it was a belt on these engines. If a timing belt snaps your engine wouldn't keep running for even a second.

Now this explains half of my confusions..

You must be right. I swear he said timing belt which led me to be very confused, but I must have misheard. It must have been the accessory belt.

Thanks.
What could be the reason for the shredding?

seizing pulley on tensioner? Belt too loose?

Foreign body falling between the belt and pulley, normal wear although at the mileage u stated the belt should be fine still. Odd
