New F1 regulations: significant redesign of vehicles

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/formula1/25158104

TLDR; F1 is benching NA V8's and getting V6 Turbos, some re-design of aerobody, new KERS/ERS system

"The V8 engines produced about 780bhp. The new turbo engines will on their own produce in the region of 620bhp or more, but the electrical energy will increase that back up to at least the same as before. Some insiders have even said total power could be as high as 840bhp at the start of 2014."

"One electric motor works like the current Kers. When a driver brakes, a motor-generator captures energy and converts it to electrical power, which is stored in a battery. This can then be re-applied during acceleration to boost performance.

The second electrical motor is attached to the turbo.
Normally a turbo has something called a waste-gate on the exhaust side, which releases excess energy if the pressure gets too high.
Instead of a waste-gate, the motor will convert that excess energy into electricity by preventing the turbo from over-speeding. This electrical energy can then be used immediately or to help charge the battery pack.
This second motor is new technology and it is an area that has been left open for F1 to innovate.

Because the turbo can be maintained at the required operating revs, its power delivery should be instant."

meh

i say make it no rules

i want to see cars shatter into bits and pieces from cornering force overload and cars reachign 600mph on the straights

bring it on!

Freaking crazy

I say lift the military restrictions on the Japanese. Outcome: Initial D + Gundam

Second this

In regards to F1, yeah no restrictions........these things are supposed to be the height of automotive technology yet we try to limit them more and more *thinks back to the 1000hp V10 or the lunatic manual gear changing 1400hp twin turbo I4 monsters of the Senna era.

I want cars that go 400mph, are powered by octa-turbo'd scram jets going up vertical corkscrew around skyscrapers, with their "pilots" nationally celebrated as hero's for not getting killed every other race

FIA needs to stop with all the technical regulations and simply give teams a budget cap. XX million a year maximum for everyone and then forgo all these silly rules about aero and tires.

They are discussing 2 obligatory pit stops as well. FIA doesnt understand that no one wants to see tire strategy and pit stops, they want to see the fastest cars being driven as fast as possible by the fastest drivers. A budget cap along with more design freedom would be a better test automotive design and would make the constructors championship actually mean something.

As far as I am concerned there are only 3 basic rules which should be needed in F1 regulations. Engine displacement, chassis dimensions (wheelbase, height, width), and safety regulation (crash test standards etc). Give them a max displacement and let the teams do what they want with it. supercharged V8, turbo V6, or even 4 cyl.

I could rant about this all day long, bit of an F1 nut. Unfortunately I'm slowly losing hope in my favorite autosport.

I agree completely!

F1 is becoming a spec class. The new rules suck. Kers aided V-6's? What BS!

I bet if you asked everyone except the governing bodies (teams, manufacturers, drivers, fans) what they wanted, they would say to bring back the high revving, 1000+HP v-10's and v-12's, let the companies build what they think are the fastest cars, don't restrict anything except the basics, and let the drivers hash it out on the track.

I want to have faith, I LIVE for F1, but kers aided turbo V-6's is just wrong IMO.

I support these, can't wait to see KERS on road cars.

serialk11r 12-04-2013 12:14 AM

The KERS aided thing is actually pretty neat, it's an electric turbo-compound which lets you make moar power.

While F1 is called *Formula for a reason, I think it's stupid how teams blow hundreds of millions on tweaking the tiny things within the tight restrictions when if you just made it who can build the fastest car with say a fuel or budget or something restriction, then you'd get better cars and less money spent to get there. If there were no engine regulations then money would go towards you know, actual design, instead of figuring out how to tweak some exotic materials to meet the regulations. Maybe a fixed aero rule because I dislike the whole giant wing with DRS thing. Let them do whatever they want for bodywork and powertrain, within safety regulations, maybe require a minimum weight, use the best tires, and I think it'd end up a lot more interesting.

Joakim3 12-04-2013 12:29 AM

Essentially what everyone else is saying

The only rules that should be applied is
- Minimum weight
- Safety standards
- Universal Tire
- Budget cap
- Driver Electronic/Aids

Exactly! The only thing I would add as far as regulations go, is no driver aid/traction control/electronic suspension. No one wants to see a car that practically drives itself.

Getting rid of traction control is probably the only good regulation change they have made in over 20 years. Its like theyre not even listening to the fans. Pathetic.

Other than that..... let the teams go utterly bonkers, I want to see fucking Hot Wheels

Add driver/electronic aids to that and you have yourself a list as far as I am concerned.

Added lol

Definitely, whats the point of F1 if not to go all out? If they want their cars to run on depleted uranium let them, if they want 70 spoilers let them, if they want to put Venturi Tunnels & mirco-turbines fans that suck the tarmac off the road why the hell not........ and let the best driver win

I (and probably 99% of the F1 fan base) want fucking Brazzers not, The L Word
