Engine Oil Question

HI !! :D

I need to change the engine oil soon(3k miles). This will be my first engine oil change.

Also brz is using 0w-20 (recommended)
but I want to put 5w-30 or 10w-30
is this okay?

I heard that Mobil 1 is bad for subaru's car? If yes, why?

Which engine oil are you guys using? and oil filter ?

If I bring my own engine oil to dealer. Are they going to do it?
Thank You

You should check out the Mechanical Maintenance section as this has been covered many times. You'll get a lot of different answers concerning what oil and filter to use, though. There isn't a definitive answer. You should definitely read some of the info in the Mechanical Maintenance section as there's a lot of good information about oil in general there.

Mobil 1 isn't bad for Subaru engines. The reason why people have said that about Mobil 1 is because there has been a lot of people that have burned a lot of Mobil 1 when used with the EJ engines compared to other oils. However, there have also been a lot of people that have used Mobil 1 without any issues.

Mobile 1 has had a bad rep in the past, specifically their non-synthetic oil that used to be what Subaru used as their oil. However, that has changed with Subaru's change to synthetic. The standard synthetic Subaru 5W-30 is actually good stuff. Not sure if you should use that or the 0W-20. 0W-20 seems a bit thin, to be honest, but I'm coming from 4.5 years of driving turbo'd imprezas with 5W-30 synthetic, so maybe the NA 2.0 likes 0W-20 better.

Honestly?

If you have to ask, just have the dealer do the oil change for you, including oil. The more you mess with something you don't know or understand, the more you'll screw it up.

Why do you want to go to a thicker oil?

just did mine......used Mobil-1 0W-20 and the black Subaru filter.

For some, you GET oil changes included with the car for the first 24k miles or 2 years, whichever comes first (essentially with them estimating an oil change about every 6k miles, so you get a max of 4).

If you're getting your first 4 changes included, USE them, unless you have reason to suspect your dealership's service department is about as inept as Jiffy Lube.

If this is your first time doing an oil change, this is the perfect car to learn how to do it. Simply use the scissor jack you have in the rear trunk, jack the side of the car up to give you enough clearance and then use a Jack Stand to support the car. Go underneath the car and unbolt the oil drain plug and simply change the oil filter and add 5.5 quarts of oil and check the fluid level to be sure it's in the correct spot and youre done.

If you are confused because you are like me and need real-life picture/video reference then there are plenty of Youtube videos on what fluid level you should be looking at and where an oil drain plug might look like. Goodluck

You bought an enthusiast's car and doesn't even know the basic oil differences...?

Muskokan 11-12-2013 11:13 PM

I used Mobil 1 0w 20, haven't burnt any.
Even helped gas mileage a bit in my opinion.
