No, they will be unsafe. There is also no reason to fit 9 inch wide wheels to this car. Wide wheels do not improve handling although many think they do.

Scroll down to the rim size calculator.

Also the stock tires are junk when new. Don't try to save them they are just awful tires for this or any other car. Maybe they'd be good on a "sport" Prius but that's an oxymoron anyway.

The stock tires aren't as bad as many people think

It doesn't improve handling but it does improve grip, which is very good if you are tracking or autocrossing the car. Plus with fatass tires, the car looks so good!

they probably wont be unsafe. there is absolutely reason to go to a nine inch rim. the tires arent awful. all that being said, it doesnt seem smart and sounds like more work than its worth

Check out DarrenDriven's old topics [edit: he put on other brand tiers, but in similar size, so not exactly what you want, it was pretty stretched.]
There are a few more people that did that. Way too stretched imo.

Here you go, spot on, stock tires on x9 wheels:

You're right that stretching the stock tires onto 9" wheels would be silly, but 9" wheels with 245 width tires is actually ideal for this chassis, at least for people who autocross/track their cars.

No, they're worse than anybody thinks. For this car. They have their place, just not on this car.

Well, maybe. Wide tires don't work the way people seem to think they work. Grip is limited by the coefficient of friction. Tire width affects how that grip is utilized. Tire width doesn't change the maximum grip available.

This is often misunderstood by non experts seeking to improve vehicle performance. The ideal tire size for this car is probably 225/40 x 18.

245/40 x17 would be close to stock size but the narrower 18 in would be quicker.

Gunman 11-09-2013 11:40 PM

Tire width affects the shape of the tire contact patch, not the size of it (for a similar tire construction and pressure).
