Building a motor before turbo?
 

Is this necessary? I see most guys run about 7 psi safely with 91 octane(ca)....
I'm looking into getting info about turboing... Is going turbo a better option then just building my motor?
I just hot my brz after trading in my 08 wrx and I miss the boost!

These motors respond very well to FI in their stock form. You can put on a turbo kit and build later. Careful for detonation because of the high comp motor, though.

Go with FullBlown.

These motors can handle a decent amount of power with a proper tune. We recommend a built motor if you are trying to push over 400hp . Another reason to have the motor built is if you are limited to very poor gas.

It really all depends on your goals and what you intend to do with the car. Having a built motor will give you that piece of mind when you are beating the hell out of it.

Necessary, no. Does it make sense, sure. If you built the motor before FI then once you do get the turbo you don't need to worry. You would just have to make sure you don't go real low comp since it would become a dog probably. Lots of people are running FI on stock blocks but I know for me it would always be in the back on my mind that there is a potential failure.

I've considered building a spare short block but I think we are still so early in the improved internals game so I'd like to hold off for more options.

Paul from @avoturbowould has just over a year on his car with the AVO kit. About 20k or so miles. As stated this car like the FI as for being in California and our gas, Paul has made several trips into California and tested different gas stations along the way. His last trip to subifest he ran 9psi on the stock setup with no problems.

If you have the cash and patients. I say do both at the same time so u don't pay for tuning twice. But if you put the turbo on first you going to want more power. But you get the feel of how the car drives on low boost. Either way boost puts a nice smile on your face.

As stated there's only so much power you get with the stock internals. This however also coincides with the rest of the car being able to deal with the extra power.

If you go with a built engine and go for big power, you'll also need to build the car to handle that power, which means axles, clutch, and a bunch of other stuff.

You can get away with a turbo kit and tune on basically a stock car if you don't go too overboard.

AVO and King Tut I think both have 15-20,000 trouble free miles.

If worse comes I will take the kit off and dealer it lol

I got more than 10,000 miles on mine without issues as well.

Yep. I have over 15,000 miles on the Full Blown kit all on 93 octane and @lexusb3 has just as many on his FA20Club kit but he changes boost and fuel between 93 and E85.
