Spare tire question
 
This might be a noob question, but I'll ask anyways.

If I get aftermarket wheels (18s) will I have a problem if I blow a tire out? Can I put on the spare tire and still drive it? Im assuming the spare is 17s cause of OEM wheels?

As long as you keep the total diameter close with a lower profile tire on 18" wheel it will be no problem.

that or save 2 oem wheels to run on front or rear just incase.

Unless you are carrying those in your trunk and/or you have a really obscure tire size and model, that is a waste. Shouldn't take more than a couple days maximum to get a new spare tire if ordered new online. Our cars run a common stock size which should mean they have a common +1 (18") size as well, and any chain tire store should stock it or be able to order one easily.

the spare is smaller, than 17", it is a "half sized" spare.

but

that's okay, because it's for emergencies and you can put it on and drive the car fine.

keep in mind however,

if you have to change a wheel in the rear, you have to take off a healthy tire from the front, put that on the rear, and the spare on the front.

reason for this is because our cars have LSD... and also because the rear are the drivewheels, and having your drivewheels of different diamaters would cause funky shit.

furthermore, keep in mind that if you're slammed that a spare tire might leave you scraping ground... so if you are lowered and plan on using a spare then make sure you could actually mount it and drive.

Half sized refers to width, not diameter. There should be no problems with ground clearance.

As for mounting it on a non drive wheel, he should be driving VERY conservatively with a spare mounted and if that is the case it shouldn't matter much. But yes ideally mount to non drive wheel and drive VERY SLOW; at or under the speed limit and baby the throttle if its on the drive wheel.
