Motortrend Tests Tires with the BRZ, Mustang V6, and 328i
Similar to that one Motortrend Wide Open Throttle episode a few months back with Jesse

The BRZ's stock suspension can clearly handle sticky street tires. Whereas cars like the 328 and Mustang felt unsettled with high performance tires, the BRZ chassis was "happy as a clam" (according to Randy) on the RE11's. Good to know as I've been thinking of making the move to similar tires.
Surprised the BRZ's laptimes didn't improve much with the max performance summer tires, even though subjectively they felt more responsive/grippy. I know I personally felt my FR-S was a lot quicker on the track/autocross on max performance tires, although my baseline was all-season BS Turanzas and not Primacys. Lastly LOVE Randy's quote about the BRZ when he was finished lapping it. If I remember correctly, he had ranked it second in MT's Best Driver's Car competition. |
Randy's got "the grin":D.

i kinda think its funny that the brz responded with the smallest addition of speed to changing tires considering the hundreds of posts on this forum about how much faster the brz would be with tires than just about everything.

A new target time for Randy Pobst on street tires at Streets of Willow in a stock BRZ 1:31.1. Now the track rats have another benchmark to shoot for.
Another thing that I found interest was that the Mustang, despite all that hate and slings and arrow that are leveled at it on most Japanese and European car forums, turned in the fastest time over the BRZ and the BMW when all three were on extreme performance street tires. It was also a V6. Sure, it looked like a wallowing pig in some of the corners but it was a fast wallowing pig. |
I want to watch a show with just Randy Probst driving cars... I love his commentary!

Yea,Randy is a great guy in person.
I remember tracking with him. |
This is a great piece done by Motortrend with some really usefull insight and numbers. I wonder if the small difference in lap times between the Primacy HP's and the second tire they usedis because the two tires use the same or similar rubber compound. Randy mentioned better feel and more response on turn in which can be related to the tread pattern and tire construction of the second tire but ultimate grip never really changed.
