Shifter Rattle and Replacement

It appears as though I'm having issues that others aren't. First is was the woodpeckers in my HPFP. Now there is a rattle from the shifter. The dealership said the shifter needs to be replaced.

:sigh:

they replaced mine. Didn't help, plus they over-tightened my knob and now its upside down..whatever.

I just started to notice my Shift Knob would resonate between 4000 and 6000 rpm... Started thinking last night about resonant frequencies and whether or not a solid termination point would change it....

So I took it off, took it all apart filled the entire cavity inside (except for the threaded area) with "no more nails", let it completely harden, then put a bit in the top of it as well where the shift pattern piece goes, re-assembled it, re-installed it this morning and I hear nothing at all now from my shifter. It used to transmit a lot more from the linkage.

Once re-installed you cant even tell that the entire knob is now solid and filled. Will this solve the noise I was hearing long term, not sure yet, but I was shocked as hell this morning when it was silent and the shift knob felt better in my hand, not as flimsy.

For $100, lmao. How about a Kartboy short shifter to fix the rattle and actually make shifting more pleasant for another 100? Bigger benefit IMO.

Had mine replaced. Now it's louder.

What's the specific symptom? Neither of my cars rattle...and I have a FR-S knob that I had on for a while, it didn't rattle either...

SloS14 08-27-2013 08:26 AM

above about 4k, the shifter vibrates and sounds sorta like a rattle-snake. Not really a spot-on impression but something along those lines. Angry robot rattle-snake?

My shift knob was rattling, turned out to be the lower trim ring on the shifter knob. I popped it off, put a bit of electrical tape where the ring goes and put the ring back on. No more rattle.

I still haven't taken it in to the dealership. It was diagnosed in GA, but I'm in FL for school now. Would a short shift kit fix the issue?

I work at a Toyota Dealership and have already had the Fuel Pump Replaced and now the Shifter Replaced. I just got the shifter done today, but I do know that the Fuel Pump is still chirping and we also had to put washers between my shift knob to straighten out. After these two TSBs, I have given up on the remedys to fix the concerns that the cars come in with.

I'm also having some rattling sound coming from the shifter when reving between 4-6k rpm. [ame]http://youtu.be/pZUr4rVIulA[/ame]

Just had a Kartboy short shifter installed and now the rattling is worse. Need to take it apart again and find this rattle.

PS: Kartboy shifter must be the best upgrade EVER!!

I believe what we're hearing is the spring in the reverse lockout vibrating. I has a Kartboy and loved it, but the vibration sounded like radio static between 4k and 6k RPM, and drove me back to an OEM shifter that still rattles, but much less.

If Toyota/Subaru are smart, they'll ditch the whole reverse lockout gimmick in the future.

RevoG 10-06-2013 09:51 AM

Got to take a look at that. When we installed I also added a o-ring to the washer on the cross pin so there is no movement there. Just want one of my many rattles to leave the car.
