Braking Noise

When the brake pedal is pressed a quarter of the way down there is a creaking sound. It sounds a little bit like an old mattress spring or flute depending on the speed.

The creaking sound occurs between 5-50 MPH. There is no noise when I press firmly on the brakes. The noise seems to come from the front left side of the car. The pitch and frequency of the creaking increases with speed. The creaking is loudest and sounds most stretched out at around 20 MPH. There is no special noise that occurs when I accelerate, turn, go in reverse, or brake at speeds higher than ~50 mph.

Any ideas on what it could be? :thanks:

Well I would assume that the screech has nothing to do with replaced components, but solely on your brakes. Nothing major, have them checked out.

If the hubs were replaced, it could be the front brake dust shield, or the retaining clips/hardware for the front pads.

Pad impurities ? Dry caliper sliding pins ? Inspect brakes, although some cars are notorious for noisy brakes if lightly applied such as my old zzt231R celica. My 86 doesn't make any such brake noise though :/

Yea it is a new noise and should not exist. Thanks for the tips. I will update when I find the source of the noise.

I got it checked out at the dealer, they told me that the left wheel bearing is loose and grinding which makes the noise. I don't see how it could be the bearing when it only makes noise when I brake lightly.

Since the noise is not constant at any driving speed and doesn't come around when I turn do you think it could still be the bearing? I would appreciate any second opinions.

they said it's bearing and that's it?
if you were under warranty, let them fix it.

i personally don't think its wheel bearing. could be brake pads, shims, etc related to brake hardwares.

I think I will go to another shop to get a second opinion because I agree with you that it is a brake hardware issue.

By chance did you ever find out what the issue was? I had an incident couple of weeks ago that caused me to replace the lower control arm and now whenever I brake at low speeds around 15mph there is a noticeable and consistent grinding/creaking sound - seems to be coming whenever the rotors are reaching a certain point in its revolution. The shop said I might need new pads, but they will resurface the brake rotors.

Anyone have additional thoughts? It'd be gladly appreciated!

Same thing is happening to me right now.

We'll see when I get the wheels off and inspect the brake hardware.

I hope it does get fixed! After a tire rotation the sound went away.. and it returned for me. :(

It was the hub centering rings on my OZ's....yanked them out and they're OK now

If it's the squeal I'm thinking of and your brakes are not new, do this:
Drive it fast and do a few really hard brake stops. Mine squealed during the winter months because of dirt, salt and cold.
