BRZ D4S bulb ?
 

Checking the BRZ manual I was able to determine that
the HID use D4S bulb ... is that good ?
I know of D1S D2S D3S D4S ?
does the higher number D4S mean its the BEST of the lot ???

I am a noob and never own a car with HID before ...
and I did google HID headlights and check around a bit...

S=standard so it use plain glass shield or something ...

What do you mean by good? It is a bit cheaper than HID in 3 series.

there are many more different types of halogen bulbs, but you wouldn't say one socket type is superior than the other, especially just by the number designation [ie- 9005 < 9006], would you?

Actually less draw and less output. D4s is eco xenon. Output is ~100 lumens less than d2s. D4s runs at 42v instead of the 85v for d2s. D4s is also mercury free.

Up until about 2011 (starting in around 2004), D4 bulbs were only used by Toyota/Lexus, Honda started using the D4S in the CR-Z. They're not bad bulbs, and I think they will become more common, but right now they are currently almost exclusively used by Toyota.

Fantastic attribute round up on common HID bulbs! I am going to copy it for future reference.

Actually from my research the only downside with the D4S bulb that I can see is a shorter bulb life. The beamspread actually looks better and the lumen output is the same as the D2S, at least according to the info on this post.

Three questions

1) Does anyone know what color temperature are the OEM bulbs ?

2) For those on the know, what is your favorite color temperature for HID headlights?

3) Preferred brand

4300k ? most light on the road ? 5000K is WHITE light... slightly less output...
6000K is diamond white.. blue white slightly less output.

OEM is 4300K, it has the most light output, and is my preferred colour. 5000K isn't terrible either, but anything above that I do not care for, but that's a personal thing as far as colour is concerned. 4300K has the most light though.

There are some decent brands out there, but D4S is a bit harder to find bulbs for. Philips are very good and used to be OEM for Toyota/Lexus, they have since switched to a Japanese supplier Toshiba-Harison, which are very good as well. I am running the OE Toshiba-Harison bulbs in my IS.

I think I would prefer a more blueish color (say 6k) but I'm not willing to sacrifice light output for color so I guess OEM 4300K it is. Thanks for your input!

i had no idea, probably should have searched a bit before posting; things have changed since 2008 [last time i drove] :P

i'm personally going with Phillips 8k...

8000K is not bright. 6000K is okay, but it's hard to see in the rain. The peak is mostly between 4300K-4500K, that's why 4300K being the brightest.
