Invidia Q300 catback TUING required?
 

Hi guys,

I have a friend who told me that without any tuning, the aftermarket parts does not give you horsepower..except for those intake that advertise no tuning required. Is that true? His reasoning was that you free up the back pressure or reduce it. but the volume of your air does not change. But then since the OEM exhaust was restricted enough to cause high back pressure, which further restrict power. does it not mean swapping the exhaust would at least get you something for the OEM setting?:burnrubber::sigh:

You will receive gains without a tune for all exhaust pieces you swap out on this car. You will receive larger gains when tuned with these pieces.

Exhaust, Tuning etc.
 

Thank you! so if I want to tune it how much does it affect gas mileage? if i only have the exhaust and intake on. Do you also suggest any tuning kit? AEM etc?

You will received increased gas mileage with full exhaust and a tune if you keep a light foot at the same time it will go down faster if you have your foot on it and you're modded. I'm using ECUTEK for tuning and have headers and full exhaust including the q300.

Just to make sure. you said that if you get on the gas you also burn more gas than the stock correct? I am just a little scared for the chance of engine failure. I think one guy on this forum was driving very spirited in his stock on the track and the engine failed after a couple time. The dealer told him that it was not covered because there were metal throughout the engine....

Does getting on the gas after tune burn less gas than you would if you get on the gas of a stock?

Yes you burn more because more the tune allows for more fuel to be pushed. Engine failure from metal in the engine isn't caused by tuning, it's caused by metal shavings in the engine.

accelerating on stock will burn less gas than accelerating with a tune, however running a full exhaust without a tune would probably use up more gas than it would with a tune. It all depends what you're using.

If you're worried about metal shavings buy a magnetic oil drain plug and swap out your oil at 3000 miles.

I see. the stock does not have a drain plug yet? I only have the q300 catback without header. so would that burn more gas without a tune?

That guy was obviously beating the snot out of his car during heavy, repeated track use and probably had a "tune" which further reduced the oem safety levels. His engine damage wasn't covered because he bought the car as a dedicated race car and no manufacturer warrants their car for racing use. You have nothing to worry about unless you get a "tune".

A "tune" will void your warranty, although many claim that the dealer/oem can not tell. So perhaps if you defraud them, you might get away with it. Then again, you may not. It's true that if you want the maximum performance from your car, a tune will provide that but it is not without a certain amount of risk. The oem tune is about as safe as possible but leaves a few hp untapped.

You will burn the same amount of gas after a tune as you did before. The only difference is that the more power you make, the more gas is burned to make it. It's hardly relevant though when talking about trivial mods like a cat-back.

All cars have an oil drain plug..the only difference I am recommending is buying one that is magnetic.

I wouldn't call the OEM tune unsafe, it has what I would call a known flaw for fast shift on/off throttle actions above 5200 RPMs in higher gears. This can be "tuned around" easily with an aftermarket tune.

Subaru tunes have had known "imperfections" since higher emissions standards kicked in around 2007 or so. See lots and lots of STI piston/ring issue threads on NASIOC due to OEM tune detonation (I've owned two STIs).

THIS DOESN'T MEAN YOUR CAR WILL HAVE PROBLEMS ON THE OEM TUNE. Only that there have been isolated incidents on this forum reported due to the OEM tune setting and aggressive driving/shifting described in that thread.

OP, I am running Q300, catless resonated frontpipe, and overpipe all without a tune on my car. You can definitely feel the difference above OEM exhaust (not huge, but you can tell).

you mentioned without the tune you might burn more gas. would it be the case on my car if i only have a intake and cat back Q300?
